Green light: upcoming BMW 5 Series will come as M5 Touring!

BMW's M GmbH brings another M Touring on the market! Namely the M5 (G99). The first M5 Touring, based on the second-generation M5 sedan, rolled off the assembly line back in 1992. Currently, BMW even offers an M3 in a touring version. And the latest generation of BMW 5 Series has been unveiled recently, including an all-electric version, the i5 (Link below). And work on an M version is already in full swing. However, electrification also plays a central role. The upcoming M5 will be marked with a “gRecently redesigned, partially electrified drive“ be equipped. "In other of our performance vehicles, we are now using a hybrid drive system that does justice to the typical M handling“, explains Dirk Häcker, Head of Development at BMW M GmbH.

BMW 5 Series will come as M5 Touring (G99).

Our opinion: It seems very likely that BMW will attract potential customers of the W214 "E63 AMG" and the RS6 C9. It is finally clear that the E63 will not have a V8 engine, while the C9 RS6 is still being discussed.

  • Hybrid drive is expected, similar to that in the BMW XM.
  • Photos show M5 Touring prototypes with full livery, certain details such as the four exhaust pipes are visible.
  • Front differs from the 5 Series Touring (G61), mainly because of the kidneys with cross braces.
  • M5 Touring will have partially electrified drive, like the BMW M5 Sedan (G90).
  • According to M GmbH, the M5 Touring willDriving dynamics and agility at a level that is unique in this vehicle class“ Offer and probably surpass the current M5 (F90).
  • Higher weight due to the hybrid drive is offset by a lower center of gravity and "with the innovative systems of the refined chassis technology" balanced.
  • Power probably over 700 hp!

The future M5 has already reached the next phase of the series development process. And testing of the first M5 Touring prototypes will begin shortly, both in urban traffic and on country roads and motorways around Munich and the headquarters of BMW M GmbH in Garching. All drive and chassis systems, including those for the new M5 Touring, will then also be tested on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife. The M5 Touring is expected to be available from 2024. We look forward to and hope for a worthy successor our Alpina B5! If we get more information, there is of course an update for this report.
