Hyundai also wants to have a say in the fight for the crown in the growing markets of the emerging markets, and not leave the markets to its competitors without a fight. Now the second generation of the Hyundai HB20S came onto the market in South America, which was already quite successful in the first generation. In general, the Koreans are currently in the process of conquering the large markets of the emerging countries with cheap, locally produced models, as Chevrolet, Fiat and Volkswagen have been doing for decades.
Design - mixture of Prius and CLA
The new Hyundai HB20S not only looks very high-quality and elegant at first glance, and impresses above all with a love of detail that is second to none in the low-budget car segment. At the front, the large headlights in the style of the Toyota Prius stand out immediately, and the large grill, which reminds a little of the current US Hyundais called Sonata and Elantra, rounds off the striking appearance at the front. The sideline of the only 4,26m long, 1,72m narrow and 1,47m high HB20S is designed in the fastback style and the roof line drops very sharply at the back, giving the impression that the new Hyundai is a hatchback model with a large size tailgate. However, this is not the case, since the rear only has a small trunk lid, as is the case with its design model, the Mercedes CLA. Above all, the horizontal taillights, which protrude far into the center of the body, are very reminiscent of the Stuttgart coupé sedan from the compact segment.
Motors completely sufficient for an empty weight of 1100 kg
In addition to a 1-liter gasoline engine, which serves as an entry-level engine, Hyundai also offers a 1-liter turbo gasoline engine with 120 hp and 175 newton meters of maximum torque and a 1,6-liter gasoline engine that delivers 130 hp and 165 newton meters of torque. The briskest engine is the 1,6-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with six-speed manual transmission, which sprints from 0 to 100 km / h in a remarkable 9,3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 191 km / h. The turbo gasoline engine is unfortunately always coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission, which means that the acceleration is slower at 10,1 seconds than with the hand-torn petrol engine, even if it is 192 km / h an hour faster at the top speed. In any case, the performance of the two more powerful engines is completely sufficient to keep up with the traffic.
The equipment offers everything your heart desires.
In addition to ESP, 6 airbags and a tire pressure monitor, the top model also offers a collision warning system with automatic emergency braking, leather equipment, a navigation system and automatic climate control. You can hardly expect more from a car that is poaching in the class of a VW Polo and was designed for growing development markets outside Europe. However, it has to be noted that a Dacia offers far fewer equipment features, and it is celebrating great success in Europe.
And finally ... With the HB20S, Hyundai could also make a big splash in Europe if the Koreans decided to offer it here in Germany. The elegant design in the fastback style and the good equipment as well as the modern engines are absolutely competitive and the Hyundai would be the perfect complement to the i20 hatchback.
