Lamborghini hybrid racing prototype: the SC63 LMDh takes off!

At a cursory glance, this car might not be immediately identifiable as a Lamborghini. The SC63 LMDh, a pure race car making its debut next year, adheres to the strict regulations of the LMDh racing series. But don't worry, he still has enough Lamborghini flair. For example in the form of typical light signatures, which are directly reminiscent of the Italian super sports car manufacturer. And then there's the massive one wing and the vertical Heckflosse – unmistakable and impressive. Last but not least, he has a coat of paint in the unmistakable Verde Mantis, which makes every Lamborghini fan's heart beat faster. And a look under the hood of the SC63 reveals an interesting mix of regulations and individual design. That's how it comes from Monocoque chassis by the supplier Liger, which is required by the LMDh racing rules. But the Lamborghini design group, that Centro styles, has managed to bring in some very special details.

NACA channels in the style of the Countach, Revuelto wheel arches and other elements provide that certain something. The engine, a brand new one 3,8 liter twin-turbo V8, was specially developed by Lamborghini for the racing program. The exact performance of the V8 remains a mystery, but along with that prescribed hybrid system he delivers the maximum allowed 500 kW (680 PS). The hybrid system itself consists of a generator and a battery, managed by a electronic control unit by Bosch. And even if all LMDh cars have to use a common gearbox, Lamborghini has them gear ratios customized. In 2024 there will be two of the SC63 on the racetracks. One will be the complete season in the FIA World Endurance Championship compete while the other in the IMSA's North American Endurance Championship is used.

to be seen at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023

The vehicles will be Iron Lynx team drive, which already has experience with Lamborghinis Huracan GT3 Evo 2 in the IMSA and the GT World Challenge Europe series. But before the SC63 is sent into the race, there is still a lot of testing to be done. Testing, optimization and improvement will continue until the 2024 racing season. For the honor of Lamborghini, the works drivers Mirko Bortolotti and Andrea Caldarelli step into the ring, supported by the Formula 1 veterans Daniil Kvyat and Romain Grosjean.
