Do you know which is the best-selling roadster in the world? It is not the BMW Z4, not the Mercedes SLK (from 2016 SLC class) and also not the Audi TT. With over 1 million units sold in 1989-2016, it's the Japanese Mazda MX-5. In the nineties, it triggered a true renaissance of the roadster. It is now available in the fourth generation as the type ND and with 160 PS (2.0 Skyactiv G-160 - iELOOP) and an empty weight of just over a ton, it has remained true to the core idea. And also the third generation type NC could already boast 160 PS (2.0 MZR) and that is exactly the basis for this modified copy from the tuner SPS Motorsport from Altendiez. With turbo-power, the SPS MX-5 now has almost twice the power with an empty weight of only 1.200 kg, which means that even TTrs & Co. should be in trouble.

For comparison: a brand new Audi TTrs has a curb weight of about 1570 kg and a performance of 400 PS a power to weight of about 3,92kg per PS. For comparison, the MX5 PLC with 1200 kg empty weight and a power of 312 PS brings it to a performance weight of 3,85 PS per kilogram. Only the standard all-wheel drive is likely to play into the cards of the Audi and, especially in the sprint to 100 km / h, let the Ingolstadt-based man pull away. The project for the bright yellow MX-5 was started about four years ago and so far the roadster has been around 300 hp with compressor power. Not enough for the men from Altendiez who have revised the MX-5 significantly.

The displacement has been increased from 2 to 2,3 liters and instead of a compressor, a Garrett GT30 turbocharger is now firing the four-cylinder engine. This leads to a yield of 312 hp and a maximum torque of 354 Nm at 0,9 bar. Incidentally, the performance goes hand in hand with the in-house SPS sports exhaust system including manifold, metal catalyst and rear silencers. And the engine has also been significantly revised and got, for example, Supertech pistons, Toga bearings and individual chip tuning software. The six-speed manual transmission is coupled with a Stage 4 racing clutch from Competition Clutch, which can reliably handle the new power. So that the performance is also transferred to the road, there was a BC Racing coilover kit with in-house tuning and a black BBS LM wheel set in the format 9 × 17 inches front & rear including Hankook Ventus V12 evo tires in 235 / 40R17 format.

If you look closely, you can see through the spokes of the aluminum rims a modified braking system with Tarox discs and steel braided lines, which enables significantly better deceleration values. The optical highlight is definitely the "Sunflower Matt Metallic" foil all around, which makes the little Japanese almost unmistakable. And the interior was also given the color. SPS foiled the fascia of the dashboard in the eye-catching yellow tone. Further details of the interior are partly quilted, gray Alcantara covers with red decorative stitching and of course the König sports seats and a leather-covered steering wheel. If we get more details about the changes, there will of course, as always, be an update for this report.
