Eighth ŠKODA trainee car is taking shape

The eighth ŠKODA trainee car is taking shape. After the project started with a delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 25 trainees from the ŠKODA vocational school decided to build a rally version of the ŠKODA KAMIQ. During a visit to ŠKODA Design, the trainees created the first sketches of their very own dream car, which they will develop and build themselves from the initial idea to the finished vehicle. For the first time, the ŠKODA Academy project is cooperating with ŠKODA Motorsport. This year's edition of the project is also something special for the ŠKODA KAMIQ: It is making its debut in the role of the trainee car.

A total of 25 trainees from the ŠKODA vocational school are taking part in this year's ŠKODA trainee car project and are celebrating two premieres at the eighth edition. After their decision to build a rally version of the ŠKODA KAMIQ, the vocational students are now cooperating with ŠKODA Motorsport for the first time in the history of the trainee car. Another novelty is the choice of the compact crossover model KAMIQ as the basis for this year's concept vehicle. Young professionals at ŠKODA's headquarters in Mladá Boleslav traditionally receive support from engineers and experienced employees from the areas of technical development, design and production.

Right from the start, the trainees at ŠKODA Design made the first drafts and sketches of their dream car with great commitment and creativity. She supported Oliver Stefani, Head of ŠKODA Design, and his team. “The rally version of the KAMIQ posed very special challenges for the creativity of the trainees. You brought a lot of great ideas on paper and into the project, ”emphasizes Stefani. Jiří Hadaščok, Exterior Design Coordinator at ŠKODA AUTO, gave the vocational students valuable tips as did his colleagues: “The vocational students did an excellent job. The designs reflect their creativity and their great passion for the project, ”he says. Trainee Adéla Nešněrová is also enthusiastic: “Our visit to ŠKODA Design was a real experience. We received valuable advice from the experienced designers, and with their support, our dream car has already taken on very concrete forms. "

The trainees made exterior and interior sketches of the next ŠKODA trainee car. The design shows a vehicle with a very special racing character, in the development of which experts from ŠKODA Motorsport also support the trainees. This first-time cooperation as part of the trainee car project marks the 120th anniversary of ŠKODA Motorsport and pays homage to the numerous racing successes of the Czech brand.

Since 2014, vocational students at the ŠKODA vocational school in Mladá Boleslav have been able to plan, develop and build a spectacular concept vehicle every year. Initially, the CITIJET was created based on the ŠKODA CITIGO. The FUNSTAR, a pick-up for the ŠKODA FABIA, followed a year later. The Coupé ATERO was based on the RAPID SPACEBACK in 2016. CITIGO was once again the inspiration for the construction of the electric ELEMENT in 2017. In 2018, the students designed the SUNROQ, a convertible version of the KAROQ SUV, followed a year later by the spectacular MOUNTIAQ pick-up study based on the ŠKODA KODIAQ.

For trainee car number seven, the trainees took on a SCALA for the first time. They transformed the compact model into the emotional Spider SLAVIA and, with the naming in the automobile manufacturer's anniversary year, reminded of the company's origins in 1895. In addition to spectacular concepts, the trainee cars also consistently offer innovative details and are thus in keeping with the ŠKODA-typical Simply Clever '-Tradition. SUNROQ and MOUNTIAQ were on view in 2020 in a themed special exhibition in the ŠKODA pavilion in the Autostadt in Wolfsburg.

The trainee car project at the ŠKODA vocational school in Mladá Boleslav is unique in the Czech Republic and offers tomorrow's skilled workers the chance to put their skills to the test in collaboration with production, design and other departments. This gives the trainees an insight into all relevant company areas. They learn to work in a team and on a project basis, to combine planning and practical implementation, and to present their work to board members. The annual trainee car is one of the most important projects for the ŠKODA Academy and impressively demonstrates the high quality of training at the vocational school in Mladá Boleslav, which has existed since 1927.
