BMW Motorrad sets new standards in the world of motorcycle racing with the introduction of active aerodynamic winglets for the models M 1000RR and S 1000 RR. In an industry where every detail counts and the hunt for the perfect lap time never ends, BMW has patented an innovation that could revolutionize the stability and performance of superbikes on the racetrack. The arms race in the superbike class is reaching a new high point. While fixed winglets are already an integral part of many machines and provide stability and additional grip when driving straight ahead, their effectiveness has its limits when cornering. The solid components cannot optimally direct the air flow in inclined positions, which leads to less efficiency and stability problems.
BMW's active aerodynamic winglets
The solution, a sophisticated system active winglets, which move independently of the angle of the bike and always parallel to the road surface align. The way it works allows the downforce to be targeted where it is needed most without disrupting overall stability. The active winglets dynamically adapt to the riding conditions to optimize airflow even in lean angles and thus increase the overall downforce and performance of the bike. The concept behind the active aerodynamic winglets is simple but ingenious: through the use of actuators The winglets are controlled based on data from lean angle sensors, which are already standard in modern superbikes.
The sensors, which are also used in traction control, stability control and in drift mode, enable the winglets to be precisely adjusted to the respective driving situation. Although the technology was primarily developed for racing and is not currently approved in MotoGP, there are many indications that it will soon make its way onto the market M 1000 RR & S 1000 RR will find. The innovation may not be directly relevant to the general public, but BMW Motorrad could, similar to other manufacturers Homologation special launch. So you might soon be able to own a piece of racing technology.
