Crossover weapon: 2024 BMW M 1000 XR prototype with 210 hp!

BMW Motorrad is celebrating the anniversary year with a bang: Not only do they have the most powerful naked bike on the market, the M 1000 R, but they also plan to unveil another unusually fierce motorcycle: the BMW M 1000 XR, which secures the title of "strongest crossover bike". So far, BMW has tended to avoid making exaggerated performance promises outside of their RR racing motorcycles. The Naked Bike S 1000 R had "only" 165 hp, but still managed to win many comparison tests in the trade press, even against much stronger rivals. Until the M 1000 R came this year. There was a similar scenario with the S 1000 XR, although the fans' desire for more horsepower was not quite as pronounced with this four-cylinder crossover. If this wish existed at all, it was rather reticent - and yet it was granted.

The M 1000 XR is on the way and will probably come with 210 hp, comparable to the MR and the S RR, whose four-cylinder, including ShiftCam for variable valve timing and valve lift, will be adopted. The final data should be published "in the second half of the year". However, what is already clear is the operational weight of just 223 kg, which can be reduced even further with the optional carbon parts and lithium battery of the M Competition Package. The maximum speed is around 280 km/h. To ensure the M XR remains stable at any speed, the fairing features winglets that provide downforce and prevent unwanted wheelies.

The long-distance sports machine

Suspension technology, aerodynamics and control electronics are intended to bring the crossover bike into performance areas that were previously only reserved for thoroughbred superbikes. The M XR is intended for "high-performance road operation, long-distance driving as well as fast laps on the racetrack" be suitable. Like the M RR and MR, the M XR is equipped with the advanced M brake, which uses a Nissin radial hand brake pump. This braking system was further developed through direct knowledge gained from the racing brakes of the works racing machines in the Superbike World Championship. Externally, the M brake is distinguished by a blue anodized coating in combination with the well-known M logo.

The exact start of sales of the BMW M 1000 XR has not yet been determined, but since 2023 is the anniversary year, it will probably be presented at least as a production model this year and will be sold from spring 2024. The price is still a matter of speculation: the S 1000 XR is currently available from €22.490. The surcharge from the SR to the MR is around €8000. That could point to a price of around €30.000 for the M XR, plus €6700 for the M Competition Package, so let's say around €37.000 in total for the full blast.

presented for the first time on the Isle of Man

The M 1000 XR was presented for the first time as a prototype as part of the Tourist Trophy, TT for short, on the Isle of Man, one of the world's most spectacular street motorcycle races. But the M 1000 R is unlikely to be the end of the road at BMW. The new GS is due to come onto the market this year, with a larger engine, which is why it will then be called the R 1300 GS. And the name M 1000 GS was reserved by BMW as a precaution.
