With “Launch Control” - the new Ducati Monster 2021!

The new Monster embodies the true essence of the Ducati brand in its most compact, essential and yet lightest appearance that is possible. The name immediately reveals the inner nature of the monsters. Monsters only. Nothing else. The original recipe dates back to 1993: a sporty but still roadworthy engine in combination with a superbike-derived frame that offers everything drivers need for daily driving pleasure. Let's think of the Italian “ristretto” coffee: Just a few drops guarantee an irresistible explosion of aromas. That is why the beating heart of the new monsters is the Testastretta 11 °, a liquid-cooled 4-valve double cylinder with 111 HP desmodromic power distribution.

Ducati Monster & Monster Plus (2021)

The front frame, inspired by that of the Panigale V4, is a short aluminum frame that is attached directly to the cylinder heads. It is even lighter and helps reduce the total weight of the motorcycle to just 166 kg (dry weight). A monster has never been such a monster. It represents the modern reinterpretation of the recipe from which the Naked Bikes segment arose and which has now been renewed to fulfill the dreams of other generations of Monster fans. The new monster is the naked sports bike within everyone's reach. It is the ideal motorcycle for beginners and improves you from ride to ride. In addition, it is the perfect everyday companion for the more experienced driver. That's because it's light, handy, effective, and quick. In other words: an irresistible fun motorcycle.

Connection to the previous generation

With “Launch Control” - the new Ducati Monster 2021!

On closer inspection from the side, the flyline clearly shows the direct connection to the previous generation, whereby the tank is characterized by the unmistakable bison back shape. The headlight perfectly integrates a future-oriented touch and at the same time is reminiscent of the round shape of the headlight that has attracted hundreds of thousands of monster lovers. The rear has essential, yet sweeping lines and is supported by a subframe that has been enriched with advanced GRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) technology to make it even lighter and more stable at the same time.

Testastretta 11 ° with 937 ccm displacement

The Euro 5-compliant, liquid-cooled Testastretta 11 ° with 937 cc displacement is a unique example of a sporty engine that does not fail to perform well on road adventures. The 90 ° V-Twin with desmodromic power distribution is an exclusive jewel in its class. Compared to the previous model 821, it increases displacement, power and torque and reduces weight (-2,4 kg), which contributes to the lightness of the motorcycle and handling also improved. It now delivers 111 hp at 9.250 rpm and a torque of 9,5 Nm at just 6.500 rpm. The newest Monster is a modern motorcycle that is a great first choice for young riders. For this reason, it is also available in the 35 kW version, which can be driven by novice drivers with an A2 driver's license.

Quick Shift Up & Down as standard

In this exclusive Testastretta twin, a lot of attention has been paid to the elaboration of the torque curve, especially at low engine speeds, which are mainly used on winding roads and when driving in the city. Powerful, yet easy-to-control power delivery is retained, also thanks to the revised transmission, which ensures precise gear changes, and thanks to the Quick Shift Up & Down (installed as standard).

The new Monster was born to be light and compact. For this reason, Ducati engineers worked hard during the design phase and focused intensely on every single detail. The frame, which is inspired by the superbike from Borgo Panigale like the first Monster, consists of an aluminum front frame like the Panigale V4. This element is 4,5 kg lighter (a good 60%) than the previous tubular space frame and now weighs 3 kg with extremely compact dimensions. In addition, the rims lose 1,7 kg, the swing arm is 1,6 kg lighter and the rear sub-frame sinks by 1,9 kg. This careful lightweight construction has resulted in a weight saving of 18 kg compared to the existing Monster 821.

The new Monster is not only lighter, but also more compact, with a wheelbase of 1.474 mm and an improved steering angle (36 °; + 7 ° compared to the Monster 821). All of this means even better handling and a more immediate and intuitive drivability to enjoy everyday life in city traffic. The seat is pleasantly low (820 mm) to improve ground support when standing, but thanks to the optional seat configuration, it can even be lowered to a seat height of 800 mm, while maintaining the highest level of comfort. The seat height of the Monster can also be lowered to 775 mm with the lowering kit for the chassis.

Such a modern monster deserves a top notch electronics package. Fully adjustable cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control and Wheelie Control are standard equipment. The new sporty character of the Monster is also underlined by its Launch Control, which ensures lightning-fast starts: Extraordinary features that are otherwise only reserved for super sports motorcycles allow the Monster to express its performance in a safe way. All functions can be easily controlled via the fittings on the left and are visible on the new 4,3-inch full TFT screen with easy-to-read graphics based on the Panigale V4 model. In the middle there is a wide tachometer with a gear indicator. All important information is always available.

The Monster represents the essence of Ducati customizing, including aesthetics. For this reason, sticker sets were developed that are offered as accessories. For those fans who would like to equip their motorcycle with a more unusual paint job, colored plastic kits will also be available. The completely new Monster will also be available in the exclusive “Plus” version, in which the aerodynamic cockpit fairing and the pillion seat cover are added to the standard equipment. Like all current Ducati models, the new Monster can also be personalized, thanks to the Ducati Performance catalog, which includes the homologated Termignoni silencer, the front fairing, as well as numerous sticker kits, carbon or machined details and exclusive covers , becomes a unique motorcycle.

Design of the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

The new Monster draws its DNA from the model from 1993, namely from what is absolutely necessary in order to achieve maximum driving pleasure while riding a motorcycle. In other words: an engine, a seat, a tank and a handlebar. In addition, it integrates all the unmistakable elements that characterize the iconic model: the tank in the shape of a bison back, the round headlight, the puristic rear and, last but not least, the engine, the most important element.

It is definitely a brand new chapter, characterized by evolved shapes that blend with modern, sporty, elegant, refined yet technological tastes. All of its values are thus perfectly integrated into the design. Maximum compactness and lightness are cleverly combined with the traditional but essential and pure lines of Ducati. In addition, every single technical feature is in harmony with the design to reinterpret the “Sport Naked” concept conceived by Ducati in 1993. Starting with the front frame, which is clearly inspired by the Panigale V4.

With “Launch Control” - the new Ducati Monster 2021!

This new machine reveals all its seductive lines at the zenith, more precisely the narrow seat, the muscular tank that widens towards the rear in order to nestle up to the volume of the side panels as a real sports motorcycle. The tank is undoubtedly the cherry on the cake. Arched and muscular, as it should be for a real Monster, with the classic knee area, it develops a volume like a super sports machine in the sides stretched towards the front wheel. The proportions have also changed and become shorter to accommodate more modern and advanced ergonomics.

The short tail, essential and appealing, has a visible rear frame with structural and aesthetic function and two painted side panels inspired by the Panigale V4. The full LED headlight retains the iconic, round shape, which is made even clearer and more modern thanks to the integration of the LED daytime running light system (DRL). The structure of the headlamp is also evolving, thanks to a lens that fully integrates both optical and electronic elements. In addition, the technical elements help create modern and technological stimuli. Turn signals with swiping technology and automatic switch-off are now also on board.

Motor of the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

The new Monster is powered by the 937 cc desmodromic two-cylinder Testastretta 11 ° engine. In this latest version, the weight has been reduced (-2,4 kg), which means that further performance and handling values are now achieved. The two-cylinder is designed as a load-bearing frame element and is a crucial element that ensures the overall lightness of the motorcycle. The Euro 5 homologation did not prevent the Ducati technicians from achieving a higher level of performance than the previous Monster with a maximum output of 111 hp (81,6 kW) at 9.250 rpm and a maximum torque of 9,5 kg (93 Nm ) at 6.500 rpm. The power increases by 2 HP, while the torque increases by 0,7 kg and the maximum peak value compared to the 821 model is reached at 1.250 rpm. The new engine is more powerful across the rev range, especially at low to medium revs, which are mostly used on the road. This number therefore means a richer power output along with an earlier engine response. In other words: it guarantees a further level of exciting driving fun.

With “Launch Control” - the new Ducati Monster 2021!

Thanks to the revision of all components, the brand new Testastretta engine 937 gives an extremely reliable and at the same time affordable result in terms of (long) maintenance intervals. In fact, the oil service is only necessary every 15.000 km, while the valve clearance check is due every 30.000 km. The ride-by-wire system allows the integration of different driving modes to change the character of the engine according to the driving style and preferences of the driver.

The clutch with which the new Monster is equipped is a wet clutch and can guarantee clear feedback thanks to its special self-servo system. Thanks to the new hydraulic control, the levers are extremely "easy" to pull (-20% effort) and their modulation is perfect to suit drivers of all skill levels and driving styles. This system works in two ways: by pushing the disks against each other when accelerating and reducing the pressure on the clutch disks when opposing torque is applied, thereby preventing the rear wheel from destabilizing when aggressively downshifting. The Quick Shifter, which is available as standard, ensures gearshift assistance both when upshifting and when downshifting and is the perfect companion for both really sporty adventures and when driving in town, so that the driver does not have to change gears frequently in this special case.

Frame of the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

The chassis of the new Monster transfers the inspiring principles behind the Ducati Superbikes to a street motorcycle with surprising precision and effectiveness. The new Monster puts the engine back in focus. The new engine is connected to a front frame derived from that of the Panigale V4 model. It is made of aluminum and is 4,5 kg lighter than that of the 821 model. Another distinguishing feature is the new swing arm, also made of aluminum, which takes up the pattern introduced with the new Multistrada V4 and is a clearer one than the previous Monster 821 model Has a weight loss of 1,6 kg. All this, combined with the great attention paid to every single detail, has resulted in the weight of the new monsters setting a record within the category: 188 kg when ready to drive. That is a solid 18 kg less than the previous model. The dry weight is 166 kg.

With “Launch Control” - the new Ducati Monster 2021!

This ingenious configuration is extremely light and also has a very compact chassis. For this reason, the wheelbase is shortened to 1.474 mm. A wider steering angle is a solution that improves the motorcycle in daily use and a clear cornerstone of the Monster Project. The new frame, but also the careful positioning of some parts, such as the radiator, have made a great improvement over the previous Monster 821 model possible, namely 36 ° steering angle and, more precisely, 7 ° more than the previous version. Thanks to this technical solution, the Monster is more agile than ever in city traffic and it is now easier and more intuitive to use when changing direction.

The technical optimization focuses on the engine. The slim rear, which is connected directly to the engine, also contributes to the lightness. A single element made of GRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic), which serves as a load-bearing component and as a carrier for all electrical and electronic parts. The battery has also been redesigned in terms of its size (now smaller) and light weight. In general, every component has been designed to be as light as possible.

Seat position of the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

The seating position deserves a special mention. A comfortable and dominant seating position, even with a sporty driving style, is a trademark of the Monster. The driver now feels even more comfortable and relaxed thanks to the special shape of the seat, which is not only characterized by an extremely reduced shape, but also by an exclusive foam. The latter maximizes comfort and converts what is happening under the tires into clear, noticeable feedback. The seating position has been refreshed to further improve ergonomics, control and comfort. The seat - 820 mm from the floor and with a good foam thickness of 70 mm - now approaches the 65 mm handlebar, the footrests are lowered by 10 mm and moved forward by 35 mm. The position of the driver is then a little more upright and the handlebars are now 70 mm closer to the driver.

With “Launch Control” - the new Ducati Monster 2021!

The lower bench - available as an accessory - still maintains a high level of comfort thanks to a foam thickness of 50 mm, so that the ground clearance is now only 800 mm. The new Monster even goes one step further: a special lowering kit enables the driver to reduce the seat height to up to 775 mm; the footrests follow the same mechanics to meet the preferred ergonomic setting.

Chassis of the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

The brand new Ducati Monster is equipped with a 43mm fork that offers 130mm of travel on the front wheel. The adjustable rear shock absorber allows a particularly generous suspension travel for the rear wheel: a good 140 mm. The shock absorber works in conjunction with the cantilever scheme attached directly to the swing arm and with a double K spring, which provides the right linkage progression. Comfort and precision, that's what the chassis of the new monsters offers, without neglecting the right balance between urban use / everyday adventure and sporty driving, which is undoubtedly part of the DNA of the new monsters.

Ducati Monster & Monster Plus tires and wheels

Even the light alloy wheels, which have been reduced to just 821 kg compared to the Monster 1,7 wheels, contribute to the lightness of the new Monster. 3,5 x 17 "front and 5,5 x 17" rear with Pirelli Diablo Rosso III tires, 120/70 front and 180/55 rear. A special choice to support the sportiness of the monsters on both dry and wet roads.

Brake system of the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

The best possible braking system while maintaining a high degree of modularity and smooth and detailed operation: that is the goal of the Ducati engineers, who have developed a top-class braking system in close cooperation with Brembo. Two Brembo M4-32 4-piston monoblock brake calipers are mounted on 320 mm discs on the front axle. The new radial pump offers an outstanding braking feel and guarantees a deceleration that sets new standards in this segment. The clutch and brake levers are both adjustable in distance to the handlebar. At the rear sits a single 245mm disc that is gripped by a Brembo caliper; like the front brake, it works with more efficient sintered brake pads.

Electronics of the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

Like all new generation Ducati motorcycles, the new Monster uses ride-by-wire technology for the motorcycle's dynamic control systems to configure the riding modes that change the character of the motorcycle and adapt it to road conditions and / or riding ability adjust the driver. The ABS, which can be set in 3 levels, now integrates the cornering braking function in levels 3 and 2. While the highest setting on level 3 offers extraordinary stability when braking together with maximum prevention of the rear wheel lifting (Rear Lift Control) Level 2, a sport-oriented ABS intervention with moderate rear lift control. Finally, level 1, controls only the front and offers maximum performance on the racetrack without having to intervene when lifting the rear wheel.

Ducati Traction Control (DTC)

The DTC system acts as an intelligent “filter” between the throttle grip and the rear tire. It lets the driver choose one of 8 different intervention levels. Each of the 3 Riding Modes has standard DTC levels, which can, however, be adapted to the individual riding style and road conditions of the rider.

Launch control of the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

The new Monster is equipped with a launch control system that enables extremely effective starts from a standing start. As soon as it is activated, the system autonomously controls the engine (regardless of whether the throttle is open or not) and brings the engine to maximum torque so that the owner only has to operate the clutch when starting. This is a race track-ready mode that ensures the best possible acceleration.

Wheelie control of the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

With “Launch Control” - the new Ducati Monster 2021!

The Launch Control System also uses the Wheelie Control, the control that allows the motorcycle to accelerate to the maximum while at the same time detecting any lift of the front wheel. This setting is electronically controlled, which improves driving safety and at the same time ensures the best possible acceleration performance. In addition, the Wheelie Control can be set independently of other control systems.

The Ducati riding modes undoubtedly represented a milestone in technology, as the drivers - depending on the model - could choose different settings: Sport, Touring and Urban, which optimize the behavior of the motorcycle to the individual driving style and the different road conditions. Each driving mode was developed to instantly vary the engine character (power modes) and the ABS, DTC and DWC interventions, even while driving.

  1. Sporty driving mode: The engine delivers 111 hp with direct ride-by-wire throttle valve revving, reduced DTC intervention, ABS braking effect of level 2 and moderate rear lift control. The DWC intervention improves sporty driving.
  2. Touring riding mode: The engine delivers 111 hp with more progressive RbW throttle valve rotation behavior, increased DTC intervention, ABS braking effect of level 3 to ensure maximum braking stability and moderate rear wheel lift control. DWC is optimally tuned to ensure relaxed driving.
  3. Urban riding mode: The engine delivers 75 HP maximum power with progressive RbW throttle valve rotation; the DTC is set to an even higher intervention level and the ABS to level 3, which maximizes braking stability and prevents rear wheel swing.

Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) up / down

The Ducati Quick Shifter (DQS) up / down, an electronic system derived from racing, which is available as standard on the new Monster, enables drivers to shift gears without using the clutch. This system not only increases the pleasure of sporty driving, but is also a welcome aid in city traffic or on winding roads that require frequent gear changes.

Color TFT instruments from the Ducati Monster & Monster Plus

The monster cockpit is rounded off by a 4,3-inch TFT color screen. Its graphics come from the Panigale V4 and visualize all useful information. The tachometer and the currently selected gear are displayed in the middle of the screen. Even the air temperature and fuel level can be read immediately. This device is also intended to display information from the Ducati Multimedia System (DMS), which enables the smartphone to be connected to the motorcycle via a Bluetooth module (available as an accessory) and some functions to be performed using the buttons on the handlebar Taxes. The display shows the controls of the "music player", the connection status of the headset, incoming calls and the notification symbols for received messages.
