The 2023 Honda NT1100 touring machine is here!

In 2022, the NT1100 made its debut as a newly designed touring machine that ideally combines comfort, agility and driving pleasure. The two-cylinder heart comes from the Africa Twin and is optionally available with a DCT double clutch. The tubular steel chassis with upside-down fork and Pro-Link aluminum swingarm is designed for road use, with effortless handling and a low seat height also characterizing the active all-round talent. The cladding with a 5-way height and angle-adjustable pane offers sophisticated wind and weather protection. The lush standard equipment of the NT1100 includes heated grips, side cases, center stand, cruise control and luggage rack.

Driving safety is supported by the Urban, Tour and Rain driving modes as well as two freely selectable user modes; HSTC traction control and wheelie control are also on board. A double disc brake with radial four-piston calipers decelerates at the front. A 6,5 inch TFT touchscreen rounds off the premium claim including Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® connectivity. For the 2023 model year, Honda is offering the NT1100 in an additional new color variant - in subtle gunmetal black metallic.

2023 Honda NT1100

There is a gap in the motorcycle universe full of adventure bikes. Namely for those interested in new machines who want sufficient performance, effortless handling, long-distance comfort and equipment with modern technology, but not necessarily the visual appearance or the dimensions of typical ADV bikes. Essentially, they envision an uncomplicated touring machine with dynamic, superior power output that efficiently copes with everyday life and also shines when loaded on extended, pleasurable tours.

The 2023 Honda NT1100 touring machine is here! The NT1100 is just that kind of bike. A new breed of Honda Tourer that has what it takes to appeal to both experienced and younger customers, and perhaps even reminds the odd enthusiast of similar bikes in Honda's history. With the adapted frame and the proven two-cylinder engine of the CRF1100L Africa Twin, convincing performance is guaranteed as a basis. At the same time, the NT1100 upgrades electronic features and helpful functions that increase its appeal. The NT1100 is technically unchanged in the 2023 vintage. With subtle gunmetal black metallic, an additional new color variant further enhances the visual appearance.

Model overview

Comfortable, agile, fun and functionally convincing. This is how the NT1100 can be described briefly and concisely. The design concept combines an efficiently protective half fairing with a seating position tailored to touring. The height and angle of the windscreen can be adjusted in 5 different ways, and additional wind deflectors protect against the wind. A 6,5 inch TFT touchscreen with an easy-to-read display also offers Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® connectivity. Heated grips, panniers, center stand and cruise control complete the particularly generous standard equipment.

The steel frame of the NT1100 combines a comparatively short wheelbase with handling-friendly steering geometry. Front wheel control is handled by a 43mm upside-down Showa telescopic fork, while the rear wheel has an aluminum swingarm and a Showa single shock absorber with Pro-Link linkage. If necessary, the rear spring preload can be adjusted using an easy-to-use hand wheel. The double disc brake is equipped with 310 mm discs and four-piston radial brake calipers. The tires have the usual dimensions of 120/70-R17 at the front and 180/55-R17 at the rear. The two-cylinder engine from the Africa Twin delights with touring-friendly power, plenty of torque and characterful running culture. Modifications to the intake tract and the exhaust system support powerful acceleration and a pleasant sound at low speeds. The performance is in no way at the expense of consumption. The 20 liter tank and the exemplary combustion efficiency enable economical fuel consumption and a practical range of 400 km.

Styling & Furnishing

– Fairing with excellent aerodynamic performance.
– 5-way height and angle adjustable windscreen, additional deflectors, panniers, heated grips and cruise control as standard.
– 6,5 inch TFT touchscreen including Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto® and Bluetooth connectivity.
– Equipped ex works with main stand, USB connection, 12 volt socket

The NT1100 is designed as a dynamically agile motorcycle that shines with efficient weather protection and casual, comfortable ergonomics and also allows plenty of driving pleasure on long tours. Dynamic elegance is the defining feature of the NT1100's design language. It goes without saying that design is always about function – with the aim of increasing the quality of driving experience. The fairing windshield offers 5-position height and angle adjustment, the difference between high and low position is 164 mm. Set low, the wind flows around your shoulders; set high, the air is directed over the helmets of the crew. Upper and lower deflectors provide additional wind and weather protection around the arms and body. Heated grips are also part of the standard equipment, as is cruise control. The driver sits comfortably integrated into the machine, protected by the fairing. A wide and well-padded seat offers plenty of space for the driver and front passenger; the seat height is 820 mm. The luggage rack is equipped with a passenger grab handle. The muffler runs flat to maximize luggage volume. The standard side cases are removable.

The case volume is 33 liters on the left and 32 liters on the right. The luggage eaters are deliberately kept slim for city driving and measure just 901 mm at the widest point. The 6,5 inch TFT touch screen offers three choices for the screen display. GOLD displays numeric information as well as mode information. SILVER focuses on the speedometer and tachometer, BRONZE only on the tachometer. The background color leaves a choice of black or white to a default setting. Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto® and Bluetooth connectivity allow access to smartphone functions via the display. The premium equipment is rounded off by LED lighting technology all around (including daytime running lights), self-resetting indicators and a rear light with an emergency brake signal function. The well thought-out practical functionality of the NT1100 is further enhanced by the main stand, a USB connection and a 12 volt socket.

Suspension

– The basis is the steel frame of the CRF1100L with an aluminum rear frame
– Suspension geometry designed for driving pleasure and agile handling
– Showa 43 mm upside-down telescopic forks, aluminum swingarm with Pro-Link linkage and mono shock absorber
– 310 mm dual disc brakes with radial four-piston calipers

The load-bearing structure of the NT1100 can be described as proven and robust, because the steel frame and the bolted-on aluminum tail come from the Africa Twin CRF1100L. In order to do justice to the dynamic all-round purpose of a touring motorcycle, the framework of the off-road sister was adapted with a street-oriented design with adapted steering geometry. The 43mm upside-down Showa forks are adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping and have 150mm of travel. The Showa shock absorber on the aluminum swingarm with Pro-Link deflection also has 150 mm of travel. To make riding with a passenger and/or luggage easier, the spring preload can be adjusted hydraulically using a practical hand wheel.

The cast aluminum wheels with hollow hubs feature a handsome crossing spoke design. Modern radial tires with the dimensions 120/70-R17 at the front and 180/55-R17 at the rear are fitted. The wheelbase is 1.535 mm, the steering head angle and trail are 26,5°/108 mm, and the ground clearance is 175 mm. The weight for the NT1100 with six-speed manual transmission is 238 kg with a full tank, the variant with DCT double clutch weighs 248 kg. Two 310 mm brake discs at the front are acted upon by radial four-piston calipers. The rear 256 mm disc is fitted with a single-piston caliper. A two-channel ABS protects you from unpleasant surprises when braking vigorously on treacherous or rain-soaked surfaces.

Motor

– Parallel twin-cylinder engine with 1.084 cc3 Displacement.
– 102 hp (75 kW) power and 104 Nm torque.
– Pleasant performance development, strong traction, pulsating running culture.

The 1.084 cm3 The NT8's large SOHC 1100-valve parallel twin engine is derived from the CRF1100L Africa Twin. The nominal output is 102 hp (75 kW) at 7.250 rpm and the maximum torque is 104 Nm at 6.250 rpm. Special features are the 270 degree crankshaft throw and the uneven ignition interval; both contribute to the pleasantly pulsating running culture. The compression is 10,1:1. The PGM-FI fuel injection prepares the ignitable mixture, and an electronic throttle grip control (Throttle By Wire) ensures perfect engine management. The engine tuning differs noticeably from that of the Africa Twin. The length of the air intake ducts has been optimized, and the silencer innards have also been modified to make the low-frequency pulsation even more pleasant. Overall, the engine characteristics perfectly match the touring tasks for which the NT1100 was designed.

The crankcase of the parallel twin is split vertically. The water pump is integrated in the housing on the clutch side, and the thermostat is positioned on the cylinder head to save space. The housing parts for the manual six-speed gearbox and for the DCT variant differ only slightly from the outside. The engine's two balancer shafts drive both the water and oil pumps at the same time. A sensitive crankshaft sensor manages the misfire detection, which is important for compliance with Euro 5 and the exact functioning of all onboard diagnostics. In addition, the lambda sensors in the intake system allow precise measurement of the air/fuel proportions, which are also important for compliance with emissions under the strict Euro 5 regulations.

Engine electronics

– Three riding modes (Urban, Rain, Tour) plus two user riding modes
– Safety-enhancing, three-stage traction control
– Three-stage adjustable wheelie control

The engine power, safety-enhancing HSTC traction control and wheelie control are managed and controlled via the electronic throttle grip control (throttle by wire) depending on the selected driving mode. There are three preconfigured riding modes (Urban, Rain, Tour) to choose from, covering a variety of riding conditions. For the freely configurable user driving modes, performance and engine braking can be set in three stages, with stage 1 representing the respective maximum. Three levels can also be preselected for the HSTC traction control and the wheelie control, with Level 3 representing the highest level of intervention. The operating mode is selected via the left handlebar panel. If the HSTC traction control is activated while driving, a warning light lights up on the TFT display in the cockpit to provide visual information.

  • Urban as the standard mode offers a universally suitable setting for power delivery and engine braking.
  • RAIN reduces engine power and engine braking when coasting for additional safety on wet or slippery asphalt.
  • TOUR combines maximum power development with medium engine braking and is suitable for tours with a passenger and luggage, especially when powerful acceleration is required.
  • USER 1 and 2 allow two personalized setups. The configurable user modes are saved automatically and do not have to be constantly reset when the ignition is switched on again after stops.

DCT dual clutch transmission

– Gear changes are possible automatically (AT) and manually (MT) with DCT
- The three-stage S mode allows higher revs and downshifts earlier; ideal for dynamic, sporty driving

Honda has already sold more than 200.000 motorcycles with dual clutch transmissions (DCT stands for Dual Clutch Transmission) in Europe. In 2009 the system debuted in the VFR1200F. Acceptance of DCT technology, which only Honda offers in the motorcycle sector, is generally high. Since the NT1100 was launched, 66% of buyers have opted for the optional DCT variant. The dual-clutch transmission makes driving easier by automatically changing gears. The electronic-hydraulic control also takes care of the metered actuation of the clutch for moving off. That's why there is no clutch lever on DCT Hondas. Simply twisting the throttle after a riding mode is activated is all it takes to set off. The ingeniously simple operation quickly becomes a pleasant matter of course for users, which they are reluctant to do without.

Technically, the DCT system uses two clutches: one for starting and for gears one, three and five, the other for second, fourth and sixth gear. Each clutch is controlled by an electronic-hydraulic circuit. With automated shifting, the system selects the next gear using the currently open clutch. While this closes electronically, the other opens at the same time – so that the newly selected gear can engage without any interruption in traction. The result is smooth, fast gear changes without noticeable shift pauses. Rear wheel traction is minimally interrupted when changing gears, which virtually eliminates machine bucking and pitching. Another benefit is the potentially increased service life, because the system prevents gear changes that could be carried out roughly or carelessly, which could damage the gears.

Stalling when starting off is also not possible with DCT, as there is no clutch lever to operate. Especially in city traffic, a bike with a double clutch is pleasantly effortless and allows the driver to devote his full attention to what is happening on the road. DCT allows automated (AT) and manual (MT) modes of operation. D automatic allows stress-free all-round efficiency and is equally suitable for city and motorway use. S automatic supports sportier driving in three stages, with the ECU control unit allowing the engine to rev up slightly before upshifting and downshifting slightly earlier for more engine braking. Level 1 changes gears in the medium speed range. Level 3 is designed to be more sporty for higher revs, with Level 2 being somewhere in between the two in terms of function. The preferred level in S-Auto mode can be saved. In manual MT mode, the rider selects gears using the thumb and forefinger paddles on the left handlebar.

Honda has tailored a comprehensive range of accessories for the NT1100, such as a quick shifter with auto blipper function or decorative aluminum covers for hard case luggage solutions. In order to make it easier for future owners to individually complete their NT1100, there are three pre-configured equipment packages to choose from, which also allow price advantages.
