The new Honda CB650R model year 2022 is presented!

The fan base of Honda's Neo Sports Café middleweight will continue to grow, because the CB650R will of course also enrich the model range in 2022 (technically unchanged). A smooth 95 hp four-cylinder in-line engine in a modern chassis with a 41 mm Showa Separate Function Big Piston USD fork, HSTC traction control, anti-hopping clutch, modern LCD cockpit and USB type C charging socket are offered under the seat. The unmistakable design remains unchanged, with the choice of colors growing to four options, including the new Sword Silver Metallic.

Honda CB650R 2022

Honda always strives to push the boundaries - both in terms of design and engineering. For the 2018 season, the CB1000R, CB300R and CB125R brought a breath of fresh air to the naked bike segment. Under the design theme "Neo Sports Café", Honda combined the style elements of classic café racers with a future-oriented minimalist look.

The gap in the middle class was finally closed in 2019 with the CB650R. This bike was specifically built for a young target group who intends to set themselves apart in style, but who do not want to forego engine performance or agile handling. The feedback from buyers was positive and the story of the CB650R developed into a success story.

For the 2021 model year, the CB650R received an upgrade of the front fork as well as a number of detail improvements to increase comfort and practicality. In 2022, a new color variant will further enhance the attractive appearance of the CB650R.

Valerio Aiello, designer at Honda's European research and development department in Rome, on the aesthetics of the Neo Sports Café range:

“The CB4 Concept, which was presented at EICMA in 2015, was the inspiration for the entire current Neo Sports Café range from Honda. We had set ourselves the goal of understanding the world of café racers and reinterpreting it in a modern way.

All models of the CB series are not just retro bikes, but much more “neo classics”. This means that they are modern motorcycles with classic borrowings in combination with innovative technology.

We wanted to create a new style that is different from the common street fighters of recent years and at the same time is far removed from the classic café racer style. The result clearly distinguishes the Neo Sports Café models from their competitors.

Regardless of whether you like it or not, our bikes are instantly recognizable as Hondas. The competition has either classic or very modern motorcycles in its portfolio, but in my opinion none that combines both styles.

While developing the CB4 concept, I found inspiration outside of the motorcycle universe, in the world of watches. I've always admired their technoid approach and so the “art of mechanics” became a key concept in creating the design for the Neo Sports Cafés.

"Mechanical Art" seeks to showcase the beauty of various mechanical elements that Honda has always valued. Watches are particularly good at this because their mechanics always exude their own charm. "

Model overview

The CB650R received a significant facelift for the first time in 2021 - with a 41 mm Showa Big Piston Upside Down fork *, which further improves the motorcycle's handling characteristics. The Euro 5 conformity of the engine was ensured without any loss of performance. The other updates included a handlebar that extended further forward, an improved LCD display and a USB charging socket under the seat. Further fine-tuning concerned the revised side panels and a new license plate holder.

The CB650R for the 2022 model year will be available in four color variants and with the now blackened front wheel fender:

  • Metallic Silver Sword **NEW**
  • Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic
  • Candy Chromosphere Red
  • Matt Jeans Blue Metallic

* Full Name: Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SFFBP) front fork

Equipment features

  • Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SFFBP) upside down fork
  • Radial four-piston brake calipers, floating brake discs
  • 120/70 ZR17 front and 180/55 ZR17 rear tires

The steel frame of the CB650R, which forms the basis for a harmoniously balanced driving behavior and a high level of driver feedback, uses elaborately forged mountings for the swing arm bearings and two bridge spar elements with a specially adjusted stiffness balance (stiffer around the steering head area and more flexible in the side Areas). The lead is 25,5 ° with a lag of 101 mm and a wheelbase of 1.450 mm. The curb weight is 202,5 kg.

The 41 mm SFFBP upside-down fork from Showa meets all requirements for high-quality and precise front wheel guidance. The separate arrangement of damping and spring elements in the two fork tubes ensures first-class function in conjunction with low weight. The use of a larger piston results in the best damping properties and a safe front wheel feeling. The directly hinged mono shock absorber of the artfully curved swing arm made of cast aluminum offers a 7-stage adjustment of the spring preload.

Radially mounted four-piston brake calipers grip the floating, front 310mm wave brake discs. They are supported by a single-piston brake caliper and a 240mm brake disc on the rear wheel. The CB650R has a two-channel ABS system for this purpose.

Tires in the dimensions 120/70 ZR17 (front) and 180/55 ZR17 (rear) are mounted on the cast aluminum rims.

3.2 Styling & equipment

  • Carefully crafted Side panels and fenders / license plate holder
  • Straight handlebars and a generous steering angle for the best vehicle control
  • Easy to read LCD display; USB-C charging socket under the seat

The handsome Neo Sports Café style of the CB650R is characterized by its compact and slightly trapezoidal silhouette with short overhangs. The fuel tank, shaped like a sculpture, is a key visual element. The lines harmonize with the metal applications and put the four-cylinder engine in the limelight.

The steering angle is 35 degrees, which not only makes maneuvering easier, but also makes it easier to master slow corners and tight hairpins. The subtle side panels emphasize the simple but pleasing play of shapes of the machine; likewise the license plate holder, which is made of metal instead of plastic. There is a USB-C charging socket under the seat. The seat height is a pleasant 810 mm.

Like the entire lighting system, the round headlight is equipped with LEDs and is an integral part of the Neo Sports Café design. The LCD display in the cockpit is similar to the instruments of the CB1000R sister and has a gear display and an upshift indicator.

Motor

  • 650 cubic capacity, 95 HP peak power, 63 Nm max.torque
  • With 48 HP also driving license A2 capable
  • HSTC traction control for increased driving safety
  • Meets the Euro 5 standard

The 649 cm3 The large DOHC 16-valve in-line four-cylinder is tailored to provide impressive performance and the best possible smoothness in a practical manner. It embodies everything that has always distinguished Honda's inline four engines, namely inspiring performance, smooth running and exemplary reliability. The peak output of 95 PS (70 kW) is achieved at 12.000 rpm, the peak torque is 63 Nm at 8.500 rpm. A conversion to 2 HP (48kW) is possible for owners of the driving license class A35.

The engine specification to meet the Euro 5 standard (from the 2021 year) required a revision of the ECU control unit, the camshafts, the intake timing, the catalytic converter and the rear silencer as well as the addition of a crankshaft pulse sensor.

The direct actuation of the overhead camshafts via bucket tappets ensures a compact design of the cylinder head. Bore and stroke are 67mm x 46mm, the compression ratio 11,6: 1. Two air ducts supply the airbox with air and generate a throaty suction noise. Long-life Iridium spark plugs are installed as standard.

Pistons with asymmetrical piston skirts minimize the friction losses on the cylinder walls. Special outer surfaces of the liners reduce oil consumption and friction through improved heat transfer. A low-noise timing chain reduces friction losses thanks to a vanadium coating. The cylinder head and cylinders are cooled via ducts inside the engine, which means that most of the cooling hoses that are usually routed outside are superfluous.

The in-line four-cylinder with the cylinder bank inclined by 30 degrees has a compact architecture and a raised six-speed gearbox. The anti-hopping clutch promotes easy upshifts, makes downshifts smoother when driving in a sporty manner and prevents the rear wheel from stamping before cornering. The HSTC traction control (Honda Selectable Torque Control) ensures a secure grip at all times and prevents unpleasant slipping when opening the throttle. This driving aid function can also be switched off by the driver.

The fuel consumption is 4,9 liters per 100 km. With a capacity of 15,4 liters, one tank of fuel allows a range of over 300 km.

Accessories

A full range of genuine Honda accessories is available for the CB650R. Several aluminum parts and aluminum inserts emphasize the Neo Sport Café design and the similarities between the CB650R and CB1000R (instrument cover, front fenders, trim pieces, side covers, seat trim). In addition, the offer is expanded:

  • Rear lower fairing
  • Decorative rim stickers
  • Tank bag and rear pannier of the CB1000R
  • Quickshifters
  • windshield
  • 12 volt socket
  • Heated grips
  • Tank pad
