AMG - the premium tuner in Formula 1

AMG - these three letters make tuning fans warm to their hearts. Since 1967, the high-performance forge, together with Mercedes-Benz, has been developing performance-enhancing details that are used both on the racetrack and on the road. Not infrequently, the F1Developments then also find their way into series vehicles. If you see a Mercedes with the striking three letters at the rear today, you can be sure that this model has some power under the hood. AMG continues to set standards in motorsport to this day. Especially in the premier class, Formula 1, the German-British joint venture has great success as a Mercedes AMG F1 team. We take a look at the history of AMG in Formula 1.

The first factory team in the 1950s

The history of Mercedes-Benz in Formula 1 goes back to the 1950s. Argentinian Juan Manuel Fangio in particular was able to achieve the first major successes during this time. Both in 1954 and 1955 he won the Formula 1 World Championship in the "Silver Arrow". Nevertheless, the company decided to initially withdraw from motorsport. The bad accident at Le Mans in 1955, in which Mercedes was also involved, accelerated these considerations. It was to take over 50 years before the German carmaker started again with a factory team in the premier class of motorsport.

The comeback in the 21st century

Mercedes appeared again as an engine supplier in the 1990s and 2000s and supplied the Sauber or McLaren racing team with engines. Together with Mika Häkkinen there were even two other world championships. Even though there was talk of the Silver Arrows in the media at that time, the titles came from the British McLaren racing team. For the 2010 season, the time had finally come: Mercedes-Benz made its comeback as a works team. The German carmaker took over the license from Brawn GP and initially competed under the name Mercedes Grand Prix. Mercedes made a special coup with the return of Michael Schumacher. Together with Nico Rosberg, he formed the German driver duo at the Silver Arrows.

The AMG success story

The first three years were rather mixed for the racing team. After all, Nico Rosberg managed to win the season in 2012 in his first season as a Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team. Schumacher, on the other hand, ended his three-year comeback after the 2012 season without another race win. The youngest world champion of all time, Lewis Hamilton, was introduced as his successor for the 2013 season. In addition, Toto Wolff replaced the long-time motorsport director Norbert Haug. For the first time since returning, Mercedes was able to establish itself among the top teams in the coming season and placed both drivers in the top group.

The Mercedes era of dominance

Before the 2014 season, there were once again some personnel changes in the team. Team boss Ross Brawn left the command post. Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe took the lead. But also in the field of engineers, Mercedes poached some top executives from the competition and thus bundled the know-how. This strategy should pay off. In the coming years, Mercedes-AMG developed a dominance that continues to this day. Unsurprisingly, Lewis Hamilton is also the big favorite for his next world title for the 2020 season. Mercedes dominance with Hamilton began in Formula 1 in the 2014 season. 2014 was also the year in which the Formula E World Championship was held worldwide for the first time. Here, on the other hand, there is still a bit of work waiting for Mercedes. With odds of 13,00 (as of March 12.03th), Stoffel Vandoorne is one of the underdogs for the title. It remains to be seen whether this position will change before the race. Mercedes would definitely be happy about that.

Internal power struggles and total dominance

The Silver Arrows dominated the 2014 season right from the start and drove to the double World Championship with Lewis Hamilton as world champion and Nico Rosberg as runner-up. The success also meant the first German constructors' title in Formula 1 history. The Silver Arrows repeated this success next year and achieved 12 double victories. It became increasingly clear that both drivers have ambitions for the world title. A heated, intra-team duel developed in the 2016 season, which was not always fought fairly. At the end of the season, Nico Rosberg secured his first world championship and then retired from the Formula 1 circus.

What will happen after 2020?

In the racing times of 2017, 2018 and 2019, no herb seemed to have grown against the superiority of Mercedes either. Pilots Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will continue to be the team to be beaten in the coming season. But in 2021 the big rule change will come. It will be interesting to see whether the engineers from Mercedes and AMG make it to implement their lead with the new regulations.
