Mercedes-AMG relies on electric exhaust gas turbochargers!

The future of Mercedes-AMG will be electric, combining high efficiency with increased driving dynamics. In order to achieve this combination in the best possible way, the Affalterbach developers are working intensively on innovative technologies that will raise the performance level to a new level. With the next generation of vehicles, the electric exhaust gas turbocharger is coming. Mercedes-AMG is driving forward the implementation of electrification with innovative developments and also benefits from the know-how from motorsport. The latest achievement, which is already in the final stages of development, is the electric exhaust gas turbocharger, which will be used for the first time in a series model from Affalterbach in the future. This technology, which was developed together with partner Garrett Motion, comes directly from Formula 1 and resolves the conflict of objectives between a small, fast-responding loader, which achieves a comparatively low peak performance, and a large charger with high peak performance, which in turn decelerates appeals.

The highlight of this innovative supercharging: an approximately four centimeter narrow electric motor is integrated directly on the charger shaft, between the turbine wheel on the exhaust gas side and the compressor wheel on the fresh air side. This electronically controlled electric motor drives the compressor wheel before it takes over the exhaust gas flow. The electrification of the turbocharger significantly improves the response behavior directly from idling speed and over the entire speed range. The so-called turbo lag - the delayed response of a conventional charger - is eliminated by the electric motor. The result: the combustion engine reacts even more spontaneously to accelerator pedal commands, and the overall driving experience is significantly more dynamic and agile. In addition, the electrification of the turbocharger enables higher torque at low engine speeds, which also increases agility and optimizes the acceleration ability from a standing start. Even if the driver releases the accelerator or brakes, the technology of the e-turbocharger is able to maintain the boost pressure at all times, so that a continuously direct response is guaranteed.

The turbocharger creates speeds of up to 170.000 rpm, which enables a very high air throughput. It can be operated with a 48-volt electrical system. The charger, electric motor and power electronics are connected to the cooling circuit of the internal combustion engine in order to always create the best possible temperature environment. "We have clearly defined our goals for an electrified future. To achieve this, we rely on independent and highly innovative components and aggregates. We hereby supplement our technology kit strategically and tailored to our performance requirements. In one of the first steps, this includes the electrified turbocharger - an example of the transfer of Formula 1 technology to the road, with which we will raise supercharged internal combustion engines to an unprecedented level of agility", Says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
