Glass damage on the car: what now? We have the information!

Often there is a visible notch in the windshield, although nothing has been heard or noticed. If you are unlucky you can watch cobweb-like cracks emerge from the notch. Then you know that you have a stone chip in the windshield, but what now? Broken glass in any form is not uncommon. They are caused by the traffic ahead or by the driver himself. And many a person stood helpless in the parking lot of the furniture store looking for a solution for the broken rear window caused by a shelf. But what should be done if the glass breaks?

Causes of a broken glass!

Glass damage on the car: what now? We have the information!

First it must be said that it is not the one broken glass on the car. Every disc is different. In addition, the windshield do not splinterbecause it is held together by a foil. Real broken panes can occur on the rear window and to the side windows. The question is, what causes a broken glass?

  1. Rockfall: A rockfall is caused by a stone, a small screw or some other hard material that hits the disk with force. Most of the time, a stone chip hits the windscreen and the headlights. However, a break does not always have to occur. Many drivers only notice falling rocks late and drive for several years with a falling stone in the windshield without anything happening.

  2. Mistake: that will be fine ... Many rear or side windows have already broken due to a miscalculation when loading large objects into the car.
  3. Construction fault: sometimes incorrect installation of the pane can lead to a defect. Has the disc been installed incorrectly and is it too tensioned? Then the pane can tear.
  4. Storm: Hail and storms can also cause glass breakage. Storm damage is usually caused by falling branches or falling trees.

When should you make a repair and when should you replace it?

There are clear rules for this question:

  • Repair: only in case of falling rocks without cracking it is possible to carry out a car glass repair. In addition, the rockfall must not be in the driver's field of vision or close to the edge of the window. In addition, the diameter of the stone chip must be smaller than the size of a two euro coin.

  • Exchange: in all other cases a Disc replacement take place around the windshield. The side and rear windows must always be damaged if they are damaged be replaced, otherwise they will break into small pieces.

Many do not know if a rockfall needs repairing when it is not in view of the driver. Because that doesn't restrict the driver? Right! Basically, everyone has to know that for themselves. However, there is a risk that a crack can form because the pane is weakened by the stone impact. There is always an uncertainty as to whether the stone chip on the car will turn into a long crack the next morning or not.

If there is a larger or larger rockfall within the field of vision, this is a sign that the vehicle will fail at the next general inspection. You can also be stopped by the police at a traffic control and warned about the broken window. That is why a rockfall must definitely be repaired.

How expensive and time-consuming is a glass replacement?

Nowadays, car windows are not just made of glass and they are very different. Therefore, the effort depends on the exchange of the vehicle.

  1. "Winter car": the typical "winter car" drives well in winter, but has no technical refinements such as window heating or sensor technology. This car can be replaced in less than 1 hour, depending on the model.
  2. Modern vehicle: In modern vehicles, the windows often heat themselves independently and there are light and rain sensors. A head-up display integrated into the pane is also possible. Replacing the panes alone is not difficult. The difficult thing is that the connections are all reconnected correctly and that all sensors are running again. Such a disc replacement can take several hours.

The larger the car, the more difficult and complicated it can be to replace the glass. Teams and special tools are required, especially for truck and bus windows, since the window cannot be moved on its own. Basically, however, a disc replacement by trained personnel is not very time-consuming. The time factor is also within the limits:

  1. Facilities: Trained fitters are familiar with replacing the pane and know how to loosen a pane, regardless of how the pane is installed in the frame. The trained fitters also know how to connect the sensors or the heaters.
  2. Time factor: you can usually pick up the car you left in the morning at noon. Some repair services also offer on-site support, either at work or at home.
  3. Rockfall: A rockfall will be eliminated within an hour to an hour and a half. On the other hand, the drying of the filling material requires a greater amount of time.

Windshield replacement and stone chip repairs are covered by the comprehensive insurance.

If there is an agreed deductible, this must be paid. The costs for the windows vary depending on whether they are original windows or parts from the accessories. The only difference between the original screen and the accessories is usually only the missing stamp from the vehicle manufacturer. If you compare the quality of both discs, there is usually no difference.

Conclusion: an exchange is not a problem!

Nowadays it is not a problem to change a disc. It is even possible to carry out the exchange at work / at home in the shortest possible time with selected equipment and trained fitters.
If it's just a rockfall, it may be able to be repaired. But there are different rules for different rockfalls. But above all it is not possible and even forbiddento repair a stone chip that is in the driver's field of vision.

  1. Thank you for sharing this post on repairing broken glass! Unfortunately, I got a rockfall at the weekend and drove straight to the car glazier. Next time I'll try these tips. Interesting that the bigger the car, the more difficult and complicated it can be to replace the glass.

  2. I recently had my windshield repaired or replaced. It didn't take more than an hour. Little did I know that it could take several hours on more modern cars as the connections all have to be reconnected correctly.

  3. Thank you for this blog about car glass damage. I have to go to the shop to have my windshield repaired soon. The comments on stone sleep in relation to the driver's field of vision are interesting.

  4. My cousin had a rock chip on her windshield after her last trip through the woods, but not in her field of vision. So it's good to know that you can have a windshield repaired if there is a stone chip without cracking, and that you can simply replace the entire windshield if there are larger cracks.

  5. It's good to know that the only difference between an original screen and an accessory is a missing stamp from the vehicle manufacturer. My car windshield also has a stone chip since yesterday. The best thing for me to do today is to visit a competent auto glazier.

  6. Interesting that an auto glass repair is only possible with stone chips without cracking. My side mirror was destroyed and now needs to be repaired quickly. The best thing for me to do today is to find a professional car workshop.
