More peace in the automotive interior!

Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) has signed a license agreement for Active Road Noise Cancellation (ARNC) in motor vehicles with the Israeli company Silentium. Silentium's Quiet Bubble™ software technology is integrated into AKM audio speech processors and is offered worldwide. Delivery of samples is planned for the fourth quarter of 2022. Electrification in the automotive industry is progressing and the car is increasingly becoming a third living space. A major challenge for OEMs remains: to make the interior of electric vehicles quiet and to keep noise away. ARNC technology reduces road noise in milliseconds, ensuring a comfortable driving experience for vehicle occupants.

Electrification changes (almost) everything

"Electrification has presented automakers with unexpected challenges, ranging from safety to increased cost to driver comfort," comments Naoyuki Kurita, Chief Marketing Officer at AKM. “A frequently raised concern from electric car customers is how unpleasantly loud the road noise is perceived inside the vehicle compared to a combustion engine. If more autonomously driving automobiles are on the road in the near future, this problem will only get worse.”

The best of two companies combined

The collaboration takes ARNC technology to a new level by combining AKM's expertise in low-latency hardware components and Silentium's expertise in noise-cancellation software. The solution offered by both companies optimizes the control signal path from the reference sensors to the speakers to achieve high-speed transmission of vehicle signals and low-latency algorithm processing. It does this by optimizing certain components of AKM's analog-to-digital converter (ADC) so that the measured vehicle signals are quickly forwarded to the company's digital signal processor (DSP), which houses the low-latency Quiet Bubble™ Silentium software is.

Noise cancellation like premium headphones

Additional latency reductions can be achieved from the vehicle acoustics side through the use of near-field speakers in the headrest or other locations in close proximity to the passenger's head. Because all hardware, software, and acoustics are made up of low-latency paths, this solution delivers broadband in-vehicle noise-cancelling performance comparable to premium noise-cancelling headphones. “The shift to plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles is having a significant and lasting impact on vehicle interiors. noises, such as B. by tires come much more strongly to the fore. Reducing this unwanted noise is essential for a relaxed, focused and therefore safe driving experience. AKM's advanced IC products, which combine cost-effective signal processing with Silentium's state-of-the-art proprietary broadband acoustic technology, make quieter vehicle interiors available and affordable for every vehicle user," concludes Anthony Manias, Silentium's Head of Automotive.
