Tip: Our engine oil guide - what you should consider

Combustion engines not only need fuel, but also the right lubricant. Without engine oil, the engine would be a total loss within a very short time. So it is only natural that every car owner should take special care of all oil-related issues in their car. In any case, simply relying on the prescribed maintenance intervals in the specialist workshop is not enough. Reason enough that we deal with the topic and have created a small guide for you in cooperation with Autodoc.

Handles that can never be too strenuous

Tip: Our engine oil guide - what you should considerThe least that needs to be checked at regular intervals, usually every time you fill up, is the correct engine oil level. After a while and with the engine switched off, the oil level can be checked on the dipstick. Neither the minimum marking nor the maximum point should be exceeded or undershot. If the oil level is too low, it must be filled up, otherwise there is a risk of engine damage. If the oil level is too high, the fuel content in the oil should be checked in the workshop. Oil that is too diluted must be changed in good time. In modern vehicles there is often no longer an oil dipstick, here the control via a display on the dashboard works.

Carefully observe the regulations for changing the oil

Each vehicle manufacturer specifies in the service documents exactly how and when the engine oil including the oil filter must be changed. Every car owner should strictly adhere to this information. Under difficult circumstances, such as regular trailer operation or frequent city and off-road trips, an earlier change may make sense. Although this costs additional money, compared to the financial expenses that can be incurred in the event of an engine failure, it is only a negligible amount.

Oil quality according to the manufacturer's instructions should always be met

Tip: Our engine oil guide - what you should considerDepending on the model and engine type, the car manufacturers state exactly which oil quality should be used when changing and refilling. On the one hand, a special viscosity class is prescribed, which is to guarantee that the oil is always thin enough to match the respective climatic conditions or that the oil film cannot tear off. This ensures quick oiling when starting and good lubrication at high oil temperatures. On the other hand, the engine oil must meet the technical requirements according to the manufacturer's instructions. These are regulated by means of various standards that are printed on the oil containers. The oldest is the SAE standard, which indicates the viscosity class of the oil. For multi-grade oils, the first number determines the lowest temperature and the second number the maximum temperature of the environment at which the oil should be used in the engine. The American API standard and the European ACEA standard classify the oil quality with letters. Here you have to compare with the instructions of the car manufacturer and choose the right oil. Many car manufacturers still have their own quality standards that meet the special requirements of their in-house engines. In order to exclude any risk and to avoid any problems with possible warranty claims, you should always fill in these special engine oils at least in the first years.

Oil brand less important than regular change

If an engine oil meets all the required requirements, then it can be bought without hesitation. The right specifications are less important than the brand. Under certain circumstances, this can save a lot of money when changing the oil by choosing a manufacturer unknown to us.
