Preparing for the road trip on the highway: The 9 most beautiful truck stops and rest stops in Germany!

Are you on the way to vacation or your first road trip and don't know how to eat on the way? No problem at all, there is a large selection in Germany to fill every hungry stomach. Before you get started, it's best to take a look at mein-deal.com and see if it new McDonald’s vouchers for fast food lovers. There are drive-ins from the fast food giant all over Germany, so you can always find a snack option. Alternatively, it is worth visiting the truck stop or the rest stop. So that you are not surprised by dirty toilets and cheap microwave food, we have put together the nine best locations for you.

Altenburger Land Süd service area – on your journey through Thuringia

On the A4 between Gera and Chemnitz, take the Schmölln or Ronneburg exits to get to this rest area. It has a restaurant with a coffee bar and allows you to buy sandwiches for your onward journey. The advantages of this rest stop include:

  • Barrier-free parking options
  • safe access to the restaurant for those with limited mobility
  • barrier-free toilets
  • baby changing room
  • Super-fast charging of electric cars possible

At this rest stop you will be provided with everything you need for the road trip. The adjacent gas station with shop is quite expensive, the prices in the restaurant are average. The toilet facility, which appeared to be clean and well-maintained, was particularly positive in the ADAC test.

The following video shows why this is so important:

Between Hamburg and Flensburg – the Holmmoor Ost service area on the A7

The Holmmoor Ost service area is perfect for all trips heading north. Here you will find a Starbucks branch and a Marché Mövenpick restaurant. Hot and cold dishes are served quickly, so that nothing stands in the way of moving on quickly. The rest stop primarily appeals to families with its small playground. The kids can let off steam here before heading off on vacation.

There is an Esso gas station directly at the rest stop, which is equipped with electric charging stations. There is also an ATM available to withdraw money. The rest stop is open 24 hours and offers guests free Wi-Fi. If you would like to quickly check your emails on site, you can do so in the restaurant and café.

Hegau West – on the A81 motorway between Stuttgart and Singen

It is visible from the terrace of the self-service restaurant and allows parents to relax for a short time. A Coffee Fellows branch is available to satisfy your thirst for coffee every now and then. With an adjacent rest hotel you have the opportunity to stay overnight if it is no longer possible to continue your journey. One of the special features of this rest stop is the “Autobahnkirche”. A good opportunity for religious people to recharge their souls with fresh energy.

The Gruibingen Süd motorway service station – enjoy Feng Shui and schnitzel

The well-maintained toilet facilities are cleaned by Sanifair and offer a contact point for the whole family with a separate changing room and child-friendly toilets. In a mini shop you have the opportunity to buy drinks, snacks and travel essentials for the onward journey. The ambience makes up for the slightly higher prices and the shop is also designed according to the teachings of Asian interior design.

Fläming Ost – on the journey from Leipzig to Berlin

Whether on the way to Camping or on a road trip, the A9 between Leipzig and Berlin is one of the busiest highways in Germany. You can take a break at the Fläming Ost service area and relax in the restaurant. The typical Mövenpick restaurant is on offer, which is standard at many German rest stops. In Fläming Ost, however, you can enjoy a large terrace that offers a direct view of the playground and the green surroundings in summer. A perfect recovery after a strenuous journey.

You can charge your car at one of the Eon charging stations or fill it up at the adjacent Shell gas station. The sanitary facilities are provided and maintained by Sanifair, and the rest area is open 24 hours a day. If you need cash, you can find an ATM located in a secure area.

Between Würzburg and Bavaria – the Aurach Süd service area

The Aurach Süd service area is located on the A3 between the Erlangen-West and Frauenaurach exits. With barrier-free parking, you will find access to all the amenities of the stopover. The restaurant can be safely accessed by guests with mobility impairments; it is not necessary to walk on the road. The highlights of this rest stop include:

  • large menu with hot dishes, pastries and cakes
  • Takeaway sandwiches at any time of the day
  • Hygienic, well-maintained toilets, additional barrier-free toilet facilities in a separate area
  • Fast charging function for electric cars available

This rest stop is also not convincing in terms of price. The cost of products in the gas station shop is very high, but this is not uncommon for rest areas. The solid and good quality lunch or dinner compensates for the price shock; it is available at fair prices.

Between Medenbach Ost and Frankfurt, Leverkusen – rest area on the A3

The Medenbach Ost service area is located near Wiesbaden and is a perfect place for a stopover for families with children. On sunny days, the outdoor playground invites you to let off steam, while there is an indoor playground for rainy rest days. A relaxation area with deck chairs awaits adults, which is intended to help them relax. The restaurant is suitable for children, there are bibs, high chairs and child-friendly dishes on the menu.

The sanitary facilities are cleaned and maintained 24/7, and hygiene products are available free of charge in the separate changing room for babies. With a Starbucks branch, a Brotzeit bakery shop and a Marché Mövenpick restaurant, hunger both big and small can be easily satisfied. In summer, you can eat on the outdoor terrace and get some fresh air.

The facilities include free WiFi options, an ATM in a protected position, several Eon charging stations for quick charging of electric cars and a shop with the most important items for the onward journey. Prices are also high here, and anyone who buys at the rest stop always pays for it.

A4 near Heerlen-Aachen – the Frechen Süd service area invites you to linger

This rest stop is located just before Cologne and allows you to enjoy the city panorama from a distance. You can eat around the clock in the adjacent McDonald's branch, in the Brotzeit bakery or at Segafredo. A large terrace offers you the opportunity to get some fresh air while satisfying your hunger. There is a playground directly adjacent to the rest stop where the little ones can let off steam. You can easily charge your electric car at the charging stations provided.

Alternatively, go to the Aral gas station with a particularly large shop. The well-kept Sanifair toilet facilities are cleaned and maintained 24/7, and a changing table is available for parents with small children. In terms of prices, all facilities here (gas station shop, restaurants) are at a high level, although McDonald's prices correspond to the standard. Insert your vouchers to save a little money while feasting.

Between Fulda and Kassel – the Autohof 24-Eni Homberg Efze

Take Exit 84 to visit this fully equipped truck stop. The gastro area awaits you with a Paulaner beer garden, a burger restaurant, a Subway branch and a Cafeino restaurant. The latter not only serves fast food, but also focuses on healthy and light dishes. Electricity and petrol filling stations are also available, as is a large travel shop (at a high price). The Autohof, which is known to be dog and child friendly, allows you to stay overnight at a reasonable price on motorhome trips.

The entire facility is equipped with WiFi, and in addition to hygienic toilet facilities, there is also a shower available. If you are traveling with a truck or large vehicle, there is a truck wash directly on the premises. To keep young and old busy, you will find an outdoor fitness facility, an arcade and a playground for the little ones. If you have health problems, “Doc-Stop” is available to you around the clock. Here you can get first aid and contact information if you are looking for a doctor.

Conclusion: Eating and resting on a long journey - it's possible in Germany

While truck stops are primarily popular with truck drivers, rest stops are also ideal for vacation trips. The advantage of the Autohof is that you can almost always find somewhere to stay overnight with your caravan. So if you are on the way to the campsite and need a break, you have a sheltered spot there. By the way: The ADAC checks rest areas at regular intervals and uses its ratings to help ensure that quality continues to improve.
