Time change: Increased risk of accidents involving wildlife

(ADAC Autoversicherung AG) With the changeover from summer time to winter time on October 31, the risk of accidents involving wildlife increases for motorists. The rush hour traffic then falls in the twilight. Many animals are looking for food during this time and also cross roads. This is indicated by the ADAC car insurance. Around 272.000 accidents involving wildlife were reported to car insurers last year. This emerges from the current wildlife accident statistics of the General Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV). Mathematically, it crashes in Germany about every two minutes due to deer, deer or wild boar suddenly appearing. The risk is particularly high in April and May and between October and December.

A wildlife accident can easily cost several thousand euros

The damage that occurs to the vehicle in the event of a wildlife accident is covered by partial or fully comprehensive insurance. It can be expensive for drivers without this insurance coverage. ADAC car insurance pays around 3000 euros on average for every game accident. The costs of such accidents have risen significantly in recent years due to higher prices for body parts, among other things.

Comprehensive insurance generally protects motorists in the event of collisions with wild animals such as deer, deer or wild boar. Anyone who wants to be insured against accidents with grazing animals or pets should choose insurance that covers collisions with "animals of all kinds".

Avoid accidents by driving ahead

In order to avoid serious accidents with wildlife, drivers should drive with foresight and, if there is an increased risk, take their foot off the accelerator and be ready to brake. Animals often cross the roads in forest sections and on the edges of fields. The danger is particularly high at dawn and dusk, at night and in fog. If an animal appears on the side of the road, the following applies: slow down significantly or even brake completely, switch off the high beam and honk. Risky evasive maneuvers, on the other hand, should be avoided.

If it did crash once

If a wildlife accident does occur, it is important to keep calm, Hazard lights switch on, put on safety vest and secure the scene of the accident. Call the police on 110. Motorists should not touch injured animals. If a dead animal is to be dragged to the edge strip to avoid subsequent accidents, gloves are required - due to the risk of infection, never touch the animal with bare hands. For insurance purposes, hunting tenants or foresters issue a game damage certificate.
