Drivers of tuned vehicles are sometimes particularly worried about a possible police check. But that is almost always unfounded and therefore superfluous. The authorities have nothing against compliant tuning with permitted tuning accessories. In addition, from a purely statistical point of view, the control rate of tuned vehicles is not above the overall average of all controls. Various SOKOs don't change anything.

What do the police look out for during a general traffic stop?

During a general vehicle inspection, the officers first check the driver's license and vehicle registration document, as well as the roadworthiness of the vehicle. This usually involves functional lighting, the tread depth of the tires and compliance with environmental regulations (e.g. noise behavior). The latter is important for a tuned vehicle. It mustn't be too loud. But what do the officials look for in a tuned car?

With tuned vehicles, the police officers pay attention to very specific characteristics. These include:

  • the admissibility of a special chassis, the ground clearance
  • the admissibility and freedom of movement of the installed wheel-tire combination
  • the approval of the exhaust system
  • the permissibility of the lighting
  • the admissibility of sports steering wheels (especially in connection with special wheels)
  • the volume level
  • the admissibility of attached parts to the body

Drivers of tuned vehicles must ABE (General operating permit), any others EC approvals and always carry the documentation of the acceptance by an expert (TÜV etc.) with you. This is stipulated by the StVZO (§ 19 Para. 3). Anyone who does not carry the documents with them will receive a warning fee and will have to expect a much longer check.

Conclusion

  • Permitted tuning and documents that are always carried make all worries about any checks superfluous. Then you have no more to fear than any other road user. And another tip: Always stay friendly!

Of course, that wasn't the end of it.
