Many can no longer wait. As soon as the first rays of sun fall from the sky, the winter tires should also give way. The spring sun is not always the safest sign of a tire change. When is it best for drivers to use summer tires and what should you watch out for when changing? This is what the following article is about.

The perfect time to change tires

Patience when changing tires: still no time for summer tires

A well-known rule of thumb is that winter tires stay on the rims from O to O - from October to Easter. Even if our own impatience often plays a trick on us, it is important to only switch to summer tires when the temperatures remain permanently above 7 ° C.

Some tuners in particular are looking forward to the change. It also ushers in the new tuning season. But if you switch too early, you run a significant security risk. In addition, summer tires suffer irreversible damage when they come into contact with road salt, which shortens their lifespan. The ADAC warns, especially in April, about sub-zero temperatures, ice and slippery conditions that require winter tires.

When to buy new summer tires?

First, the summer tires from the previous year are checked for dents, cracks or damaged areas. The legislator prescribes a profile depth of at least 1,6 mm. However, one should not take this specification too literally: Secure summer tires are clearly, i.e. at least 3 mm, above this specification.

It is definitely not recommended to throw away the old tires immediately. Most of the time the rims are perfectly fine. There are now practical and time-saving ways to buy summer tires online and compare the different manufacturers in advance. Specialized online shops such as oponeo, Stiftung Warentest and other comparison portals help with the selection and are guaranteed to find the right tire for the respective vehicle model.

Change summer tires - from a professional or in your own workshop?

Most of the time, vehicle owners with only one set of rims and two different types of tires have no choice but to go to the nearest workshop. Without balancing, simply changing the tires costs up to € 40. It is worth comparing the services and prices of the workshops here. If you have neither a domestic garage nor space for storing the tires, you should calculate the cost of around € 50 per year. For home tire changes, the vehicle is on a level surface. It is also advisable to engage first gear and apply the handbrake. Automatic vehicles are set to P with the gear lever.

But the winter tires should not immediately disappear in the next corner. Mark your position with chalk, such as for the left rear: HL. If the rear tires are installed in the front next winter, this guarantees even wear. If the tires have worn differently, a specialist should check the suspension settings beforehand.

Summer tire change - what should be considered?

Patience when changing tires: still no time for summer tiresEven if a specialist workshop has changed the summer tires, the next trip goes to the petrol station. This is where sensible drivers check their tire pressure. The manufacturers have left the information on the optimal tire pressure on the inside of the driver's door or directly in the fuel cap.

One of the clearest signs of a faulty tire pressure is vibration of the steering wheel. The winter tires should wait dry, cool and as dark as possible for their next use. On the one hand, these are placed upright against the wall and then have to be rotated regularly.

Easter is the perfect time to switch to summer tires. When the summer tires are balanced on the rims of the winter tires, the specialist workshop is the right partner. After the tire pressure has been checked and the winter tires have been properly marked, this year it is safe to go into traffic again and into the tuning spring. Tip: It is important to pay attention to this when a tire change is due for a tire with TPMS.
