Today's variants of mixed tires no longer have much to do with the original definition. Mixed tires in tuning
Another type of mixed tires, which is used primarily in sporty drivers and their vehicles, is the equipment of the front and rear axles with tires of different widths. This is forbidden according to StVZO in principle, however there are meanwhile innumerable exception approvals. Especially in vehicles with high engine power, the drive axle is increasingly equipped with wider tires to achieve better traction. Even larger rims on the rear axle opposite the front are not uncommon and sometimes already found from the factory. Whether such mixed tires for your vehicle is allowed, a glance reveals in your registration certificate. Advantages and disadvantages of mixed tires
If you mount wider tires on the drive axle, this will in many cases contribute to the visual enhancement of your vehicle, but you should also keep in mind that this also results in fundamental changes in handling. Of course, more contact surface improves power transmission and cornering stability. Even in winter, improved handling can be achieved on solid snowpack. But when it comes to rain or fresh snow, the whole thing quickly turns into the opposite. Due to the larger tire width, the aquaplaning risk increases and in case of fresh snow or slush, the tires then like to fall into the void. In the less widespread variant of the wider front tires with powerful front-wheel drive vehicles, it can also lead to understeer of the vehicle. A prime example here is the Audi RS3 model generation 8P.
Wider in front and behind? Rarely beneficial!
The compact car was designed to be particularly direct and precise and so, for the smooth-running electric power steering, a very special tire was optionally available. As standard, there were front and rear slippers in the format 235 / 35 R19 Y at Ingolstadt. On request, however, Audi also fitted wider tires in front in the format 255 / 30 R19 Y.
