Today's variants of mixed tires no longer have much to do with the original definition. This namely described the tires of a vehicle with the earlier ones Bias tires with the current Radial tires and is prohibited by law. In current usage, there is a mixed tire, if z. B. Differentiate the brand or profile of the tires used on the individual wheels. This type of mixed tires is not generally prohibited as long as the identification and dimensions of the tires do not differ, but all well-known tire manufacturers advise against such tires.

  • Mixture of radial and bias tires (not permitted)
  • Mixture of summer and winter tires (allowed but not recommended)
  • Mixture of different tire manufacturers (permissible as long as tire type and dimension are the same)
  • different tire widths on front and rear axle (only permitted with special permission or if in the
    Vehicle documents noted)

The use of different tire types on the same axis is not permitted. Exceptions here are only so-called emergency wheels that are part of the vehicle equipment and allow transitional operation until replacement of a defective tire. Mixed tires in tuning

Another type of mixed tires, which is used primarily in sporty drivers and their vehicles, is the equipment of the front and rear axles with tires of different widths. This is forbidden according to StVZO in principle, however there are meanwhile innumerable exception approvals. Especially in vehicles with high engine power, the drive axle is increasingly equipped with wider tires to achieve better traction. Even larger rims on the rear axle opposite the front are not uncommon and sometimes already found from the factory. Whether such mixed tires for your vehicle is allowed, a glance reveals in your registration certificate. The websites of tire and rim manufacturers also often provide assistance when it comes to admissibility and exemptions.

Advantages and disadvantages of mixed tires

If you mount wider tires on the drive axle, this will in many cases contribute to the visual enhancement of your vehicle, but you should also keep in mind that this also results in fundamental changes in handling. Of course, more contact surface improves power transmission and cornering stability. Even in winter, improved handling can be achieved on solid snowpack. But when it comes to rain or fresh snow, the whole thing quickly turns into the opposite. Due to the larger tire width, the aquaplaning risk increases and in case of fresh snow or slush, the tires then like to fall into the void. In the less widespread variant of the wider front tires with powerful front-wheel drive vehicles, it can also lead to understeer of the vehicle. A prime example here is the Audi RS3 model generation 8P.

Wider in front and behind? Rarely beneficial!

The compact car was designed to be particularly direct and precise and so, for the smooth-running electric power steering, a very special tire was optionally available. As standard, there were front and rear slippers in the format 235 / 35 R19 Y at Ingolstadt. On request, however, Audi also fitted wider tires in front in the format 255 / 30 R19 Y. This combination was extremely unusual because in a mixed tire otherwise the wider tires sit. Audi promised with the reverse variant, however, that the RS3 is again kurvengieriger and more agile. All of us can still remember the devastating judgment of Tim Schrick who found the RS3 anything but curvy.
