The new Opel Insignia celebrates its world premiere at the Brussels Motor Show (January 9th to 19th) and will be available for order in Germany from February. In addition to the Grand Sport limousine and the Kombi Sports Tourer, the new classy design of the sporty GSi can also be seen for the first time at the Brussels trade fair: the vertical bow openings in saber tooth look and the dynamic front apron are unmistakable. The sports star sprints into the new year with new top motorization. The Opel Insignia GSi now comes with a 169 kW / 230 hp two-liter turbo gasoline engine, new nine-speed automatic, electro-hydraulic brake booster, the mechatronic FlexRide chassis and Twinster all-wheel drive with torque vectoring (fuel consumption five-door according to NEDC1: urban 8,9, 100 l / 5,8 km, extra-urban 100 l / 6,9 km, combined 100 l / 161 km, 2 g / km CO2; fuel consumption according to WLTP8,5: combined 8,3-100 l / 198 km, 193-2 g / km COXNUMX).

New Opel Insignia in top shape

The flagship from Rüsselsheim made its debut as a GSi as well as a Grand Sport and Sports Tourer with completely newly developed, extra-efficient petrol and diesel engines. In addition, new, low-friction gearboxes reduce consumption and at the same time increase driving comfort. The customer can choose between a six-speed manual transmission, a particularly economical continuously variable automatic transmission, and eight- and nine-speed automatic transmissions. In addition, active, full-surface radiator blinds, so-called aero shutters, further improve the sleekness of the new Insignia at the front. Compared to the previous model, consumption is reduced by up to 18 percent according to the NEDC. The combined CO2 emissions drop to around 100 grams per kilometer (according to the NEDC). This makes the new Insignia one of the most efficient and economical models in its segment.

The Opel designers have further improved the high-quality interior with a fine hand. The exemplary ergonomic active seats with the AGR seal of approval (Aktion Gesunder Rück eV) and many comfort functions are now also available in Alcantara in addition to various fabric decorations and leather covers. Anyone who appreciates comfort and a classic appearance is perfectly attracted to the equipment lines Elegance and Ultimate. Sports fans will feel particularly comfortable in the new Insignia GS Line and GSi.

In addition, there are state-of-the-art security and assistance systems, especially the new adaptive IntelliLux LED® pixel light. It now has a total of 168 LED elements - 84 per headlight! They always give the Insignia driver the best overview from ultra-slim headlamps and react even faster and more precisely than before without dazzling road users or oncoming traffic.

“We are proud of our new flagship. The Insignia looks fantastic, offers leading technologies in its class such as the IntelliLux LED® pixel light, the economical petrol and diesel engines, the adaptive FlexRide chassis and excellent wellness seats. The GSi is again the top model in the series and can be driven as precisely as a real sports car, ”says Opel boss Michael Lohscheller.

Driving machine par excellence

The new Opel Insignia GSi is a piece of sports equipment for everyone who appreciates something really special. The sporty all-wheel drive with torque vectoring that can be activated at the touch of a button is unique in this segment. With the 4 × 4 drive, two clutches replace a conventional rear axle differential and ensure perfect power transmission per wheel in every driving situation. With this technology, the new Opel Insignia GSi steers more agile in curves, offers the best lateral guidance for maximum stability and shines with exemplary traction . For an even more active driving experience, the new nine-speed automatic transmission can also be operated using the paddles on the steering wheel. And if you want to be extra efficient on a steady route, such as on the motorway, you can simply leave the all-wheel drive switched off so that the drive is carried out in the most economical way purely via the front wheels.

The Opel Insignia GSi was fine-tuned on the legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. The particularly dynamically tuned chassis offers an extremely high level of grip. The biting, red-painted Brembo four-piston brakes and the already direct steering have been further improved. The new electro-hydraulic brake booster increases the braking effect and improves the pedal feel. In addition, the noise generated when braking is minimized - a plus in comfort, especially in stop & go traffic. The Insignia GSi comes with the mechatronic FlexRide chassis as standard. It adapts shock absorbers and steering in a split second; In addition, the control changes the accelerator pedal characteristic and the switching points of the standard nine-speed automatic. The driver can choose between the modes Standard, Tour, Sport and - exclusively for the GSi - Competition. That means driving dynamics and pure driving pleasure!

New generation of engines and transmissions

With the new Insignia, Opel has reduced the complexity and at the same time improved the offer for the customer. While petrol and diesel engines from three different engine families were still in use in the predecessor model, all new three- and four-cylinder engines now belong to a completely new generation. The 1,4-liter petrol engine with 107 kW / 145 hp (for all consumption figures see table) and the 1,5-liter diesel engine with 90 kW / 122 hp form the basic engine. The three-cylinder are up to 50 kg lighter than the comparable engines of the previous model and are also used in the new Astra. In the Insignia, two-liter four-cylinder engines are ranked as diesel (follows in the course of the year) as well as petrol engines with 147 kW / 200 hp and in the case of the GSi with 169 kW / 230 hp. The two two-liter petrol engines are also the first Opel engines with cylinder deactivation. If there is little load, the variable camshaft control switches off two cylinders and thus significantly reduces consumption. This is how dynamic driving pleasure works with reason.

The active full-surface aero shutter optimizes the air flow around the engine compartment. The state-of-the-art radiator blind also helps to further reduce fuel consumption and ensures the greatest possible efficiency in everyday operation. An intelligent control combines thermal, electrical and aerodynamic parameters and automatically opens or closes the parts of the radiator blind. The full-surface aero shutter also has thermal advantages: After switching off, the engine cools down more slowly, while the warm-up phase accelerates when cold starting. This has a positive impact on consumption and comfort, especially in winter, since the engine, transmission and heating heat up faster.

IntelliLux LED® pixel light

A highlight in the best sense is the lighting technology in the new Opel Insignia. In future, the Opel flagship will only have full-LED systems on board. These range from the extra energy-efficient LED headlights offered for the first time in the Insignia to the new adaptive IntelliLux LED® pixel light. While the Insignia has already provided 32 LED elements for the best visibility in the dark, in future there will be 168 state-of-the-art LED elements of the latest generation, 84 per headlight - segment leader among the volume manufacturers.

The high beam is imperceptibly aligned in milliseconds. The high number of continuously reacting LED elements results in a smooth adjustment of the light beam. In this way, oncoming vehicles or vehicles in front are “cut out” even more precisely, the light edge is more precise. In this way, the headlight illuminates a larger area than before, so that nothing is in the dark except for the precisely fitting cutout. In other words, the new headlights react even faster, more precisely and more precisely to the respective traffic situation.

Another development plus is the adaptive motorway light of the new IntelliLux LED® generation. In left-hand bends, the light beam now swings further to the left. For example, the driver recognizes signs at the edge of the road at a distance that was previously in the dark. In contrast, the light beam in freeway mode turns more strongly to the right than before in order to avoid blinding road users from the oncoming direction by chance. The other functions range from cornering and bad weather light to city and country road lights to better illumination when parking.

Full range of assistance systems

Typical of the flagship, the new Opel Insignia has a full range of assistance and infotainment systems. The rear view is improved by the new digital reversing camera. The reversing assistant, which is available with the camera, increases security when parking. The range also includes systems such as front collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane and lane departure warning, blind spot warning, adaptive speed controller with emergency braking function, traffic sign recognition, automatic parking assistant and the head-up display.

The portfolio of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible infotainment systems ranges from multimedia radio and multimedia navigation systems to multimedia navigation systems with various connected navigation services. The compatible smartphone also charges wirelessly while driving while using wireless charging. And with the optional emergency call function E-Call, help can be reached in a matter of seconds at the push of a button. If the belt tensioners or airbags are triggered, the system automatically makes an emergency call.
