The Digital Art Mode is part of the new My Modes: They expand the BMW driving experience with unique moments that arise from the interplay of vehicle functions and interior ambience. Depending on the driving situation and mood, a user experience that is both functional and emotional can be created at the push of a button or by voice command. The drive and chassis control, lighting and sound, as well as the layout, color scheme and graphics on the BMW Curved Display are precisely coordinated with one another.

A quantum leap for the BMW Group's commitment to culture: after 50 years and hundreds of international collaborations, BMW is now bringing art into the vehicle. The new digital art mode offers an additional opportunity to design the driving experience according to personal preferences and interests and to experience culture in everyday mobile life. It was created in an intensive creative collaboration between BMW Group Design and the Chinese multimedia artist Cao Fei, whose digital art ensures particularly fascinating and sensually immersive moments. With the M6 GT3 2017, Cao Fei designed the 18th BMW Art Car, the first purely digital vehicle in the history of this globally unique collection of mobile works of art. With the premiere of the integration of digital art in automobiles, you and the BMW Group are now taking the next step together.

First presentation in the new BMW iX M60: a digital work of art symbolizing the close connection between man and nature.

Digital Art Mode can be experienced for the first time in the new BMW iX M2022 at CES 60. The market launch in series vehicles from BMW will take place in the course of 2022. In selected vehicles, the Art Mode can then be configured as an ex-works option or integrated into the operating system at a later date using a remote software upgrade. "With the new Digital Art Mode, the BMW Group's cultural commitment has taken on a new and globally unique form," says Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President Digital Car, BMW Group. "For the first time, we are bringing digital art into the automobile as an integral element of the driving experience and using innovative technology to make mobility an individual, highly exclusive and emotionally charged experience."

The artistic work "Quantum Garden" created by Cao Fei and shown on the BMW Curved Display thematizes the permanent interrelationships of a globalized and networked world. Galaxies of visual spaces full of points, rays of light and clouds of fog move endlessly and at changing speeds towards and away from each other, while they constantly grow and shrink again. They give expression to the often invisible, yet constantly effective relationships between people, groups and systems, which also influence one another over great distances and thereby change their respective environment. In her work of art produced for Digital Art Mode, Cao Fei combines her reflection on these global relationships and dependencies with the pursuit of a form of interaction that is described in Asian cultures as a successful harmony between man and nature and which the artist herself explains as follows : “The desire for connection is omnipresent. It's about how we can connect with the world, live in harmony with nature and recharge our batteries. "

“2017 was an overwhelming year in which we saw the dawn of artificial intelligence. During this time, I used augmented reality to design the 18th BMW Art Car, a vehicle with a very special look and enriched with new technologies. 2021 was a difficult and extraordinary year. While humanity was stuck powerless, the world moved ceaselessly towards the Metaverse, an age of virtual immersion. At exactly this point, I was invited to contribute to the development of the future-oriented BMW Digital Art Mode, ”says Cao Fei. “My work 'Quantum Garden' gives the BMW driver the opportunity to experience the constantly changing digital landscape of a multifaceted screen world in which abstract poetry and sensory pixels meet. This network of infinite spectra connects our hearts to a call for benevolence from the depths of the universe. "

Cao Fei describes “Quantum Garden” in her own words as: “A poetic collection of different universes, innumerable atoms, clouds of fog and thousands of light bundles that shine from the depths of the universe at the highest speed, following whole galaxies, getting bigger and smaller again Crossing and expanding, connecting with each other and separating again, perceiving and hearing each other and revolving around a multitude of constantly rotating centers. In a multidimensional universe, a flight path is not linear, a journey has no end but the freedom to switch back and forth between micro and macro worlds, to wander around, to explore and to develop. "

Experience culture in a new way: The BMW Group is again doing pioneering work.

The Digital Art Mode was created in the anniversary year of the BMW Group's cultural commitment. For 50 years, the company has been taking on social responsibility in the field of culture in a variety of ways through partnerships and initiatives. Hundreds of long-term collaborations have become an essential part of social sustainability. In a large number of projects, the possibilities of digitization have been brought into focus for many years in order to expand the spectrum of the BMW Group's cultural commitment, to develop new forms of artistic expression and to inspire additional audiences.

Digital art by Cao Fei: From the racetrack to the BMW Curved Display.

With the Art Car designed by Cao Fei in 2017, the BMW Group once again took on a pioneering role in the design of innovative cultural experiences. For the first time, a vehicle was turned into a rolling work of art with the help of augmented reality. Cao Fei's BMW Art Car project comprises three components: a video about a spiritual time traveler, a carbon black BMW M6 GT3 and an augmented reality installation consisting of multicolored light particles, which is made visible via an app specially programmed for this purpose. As soon as the app is used in the vicinity of the racing car, the image on the smartphone above the BMW M6 GT3 and around the vehicle shows constantly changing light strips. The 18th BMW Art Car reflects the speed of change in the artist's home country. For Cao Fei, working on the new digital art fashion is a logical continuation of her creative work in cooperation with the BMW Group. The design of a racing car using augmented reality is now followed by the integration of digital art into the interior of series vehicles.
