Automobili Lamborghini celebrates its 2023th anniversary in 60. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Lamborghini and Japan's most pioneering contemporary artist IKEUCHI have teamed up on an avant-garde art project. Inspired by the anniversary motto The future began in 1963, the joint project Chasing the Future was named. It includes the Time Gazer and the Huracán STO Time Chaser_111100.
IKEUCHI & Lamborghini
Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, states: “We are very proud to present this work of art together with IKEUCHI in the year of our 60th anniversary. The Lamborghini Huracán STO Time Chaser_111100 combines tradition and modernity, past and future and embodies the values of Lamborghini to perfection. On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, Lamborghini makes a promise to continue growing as a bold and unconventional brand and to never stop challenging itself.”
Automobili Lamborghini, together with its strong network of 180 dealers in 53 different countries, has decided to organize a cross-industry project. Within this framework, several markets will collaborate with internationally renowned artists to celebrate the 60th anniversary. The company has created an artistic platform to explore in all forms the core values of Lamborghini that have characterized the company then and now and serve as the basis for the future. The first Japanese cooperation will be presented together with IKEUCHI in Tokyo.
IKEUCHI with distinctive talent
Since IKEUCHI burst onto the art scene in the early 2010s, its distinctive talent has quickly garnered global recognition, leading to collaborations with world-renowned brands and influential artists. Inspired by cyberpunk and robot anime, he combines plastic models with parts of industrial products to create a vision of the future with familiar functionality.
IKEUCHI, the creator of the collaborative model, states: “I am very honored to work with a brand like Automobili Lamborghini, especially on the occasion of their 60th anniversary. This brand continually strives to create the future and to challenge the status quo, just as I do with my art. Original parts from previous anniversary models were used in the creation of Time Gazer and Time Chaser.
They are intended to pay tribute to the traditional history of Lamborghini from the earliest past with a view to a long future. I hope Lamborghini owners and many more people will enjoy this collaboration. The artwork celebrates a new chapter in the history of this ever-evolving brand.”
built with genuine Lamborghini parts
These projects explore to the limit the common themes of Lamborghini and IKEUCHI, namely the concepts of time and timelessness: Built with original Lamborghini parts, the Time Gazer is intended as a large-scale work of art to express IKEUCHI's vision of the past, present and future from the perspective of the development of Embody Lamborghini.
The Lamborghini Huracan STO Time Chaser_111100, on the other hand, is an “Opera Unica”, a one-off. It brilliantly expresses IKEUCHI's cybernetics theme and Lamborghini's legendary 60-year history. This includes the shared values of always being at the forefront of development and breaking the rules of the past through creative and authentic expression. The influence of Lamborghini's heritage on this 'Opera Unica' is evident with clear references to the introductory colors of previous anniversary models. The 111100 in the model name itself - binary code for the number 60 - also refers to history.
Inspired by Lamborghini's traditional history, IKEUCHI used original parts from earlier anniversary models for these creations. These include the Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary, the Lamborghini Diablo SE30, the Lamborghini Murciélago 40th Anniversary and the Lamborghini Aventador LP-720-4 50th Anniversary. With these and other components in combination, IKEUCHI interpreted the Huracán STO in its unmistakable futuristic cyber-industrial style.
an STO with an apocalyptic cyberpunk aesthetic
Davide Sfrecola, Head of Lamborghini Japan, adds: “We are delighted to have a valuable collaboration with IKEUCHI, who represent the future of Japan. Starting with defective motherboards, through plastic to electrical wiring that has been intricately fused together, he has developed an apocalyptic cyberpunk aesthetic. He examines and reinforces the connection and relationship between people and technology in a country rich in ancient, traditional and contemporary culture. Here there is a great passion for art in all its forms, which inevitably also flows into aspects of everyday life. The brand has already enriched the colorful country in many ways. With this collaboration, we are adding further facets to the recognition value of Japan and Automobili Lamborghini.”
Artist Biography
- IKEUCHI was born in Tokyo in 1990. He graduated from the Information Design Institute of Tama Art College. For much of his college years he worked on sculptural models. For his thesis, he combined plastic models to create a hybrid diorama. He was inspired by the idea that the inner workings of a computer - the object he is most familiar with - resembles a secret base. After winning the Excellence Award in the Entertainment category at the 17th edition of the Japan Media Arts Festival, he was invited to participate in Ars Electronica, the top global event for media arts. He was also commissioned to design the campaign visual for a well-known fashion brand. His work has received much recognition at home and abroad.
