The Mercedes-AMG Official Safety Car and the Official Medical Car of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship ™ are starting the Formula 2021® season 1 with a new paintwork: the strong red not only corresponds to the colors of Mercedes-AMG, but above all to that of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team partner CrowdStrike, who will also appear as Official Mercedes Safety Car Sponsor from this season. As in previous years, the safety car is based on the 430 kW (585 hp) Mercedes-AMG GT R. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S T-model is used as the medical car.

Safety Car and Medical Car

"The FIA has done a great deal for safety in Formula 1® in recent years. Nevertheless, accidents cannot be completely avoided and it is precisely then that it becomes clear how important the work of the stewards and the reliability of the safety and medical cars are. With our AMG GT R and our C 63 S T-Model, we have two tailor-made, racetrack-tested vehicles that have proven themselves for use as FIA Safety Car and FIA Medical Car in our portfolio. The new look also suits them perfectly", Says Philipp Schiemer, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Christoph Sagemüller, Head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, adds: "Mercedes-AMG vehicles have been driving the Formula 1996® field safely around the track as Official Safety Cars since 1, when bad weather conditions or incidents make it necessary. So it was a matter of course for us to extend the contract further. Maximum safety is our top priority - both in racing and in our road vehicles. Nevertheless, we naturally hope that both vehicles will have to be used as little as possible this season."

CrowdStrike has been a partner since 2019

CrowdStrike has been a partner of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F2019 Team since 1. With this year's season, the partnership with the market leader for cloud-based device protection was expanded to include a commitment to the Mercedes Safety Car.

AMG brand ambassador and instructor at the AMG Driving Academy Bernd Mayländer has been the FIA-appointed driver of the Official Safety Car of the FIA Formula 2000 World Championship ™ since 1: "In all these years, my safety cars have never let me down. This exemplary reliability is also a very important safety factor. The high racetrack performance inspires me again and again. I am happy that I will continue to drive the FIA Safety Car and this season it will be even more varied for me, not just because of the changed color."

In 2021, Bernd Mayländer will lead the Formula 1® field alternately around the racing courses in different vehicles: For the first time since 1996, Mercedes-AMG is sharing the demanding safety tasks of the FIA Safety Car and FIA Medical Car with another automobile manufacturer - the British sports car brand Aston Martin with which there is a far-reaching technical cooperation, including in the form of the eight-cylinder biturbo engines from Affalterbach. Aston Martin will take on the first appearance at the season opener on March 28th at the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2021. Mercedes-AMG will start with its security vehicles on April 18th in the second round of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship ™ in Imola, Italy.

585 hp and a top speed of 318 km / h

Technically, the 430 kW (585 hp) Mercedes-AMG GT R remains unchanged from the previous year: the front mid-engine concept with transaxle, the powerful 4,0-liter V8 biturbo engine, the elaborately designed chassis, the sophisticated, active aerodynamics and the intelligent lightweight construction form the basis for particularly high driving dynamics. The AMG Track Package with rollover protection system and the ceramic high-performance composite braking system are available as optional equipment. This means that the AMG GT R has the ideal prerequisites for the tough job in the premier class of motorsport. The FIA's requirements for the Official Safety Car are high. It must be able to maintain a minimum speed level so that the tires and brakes of the Formula 1® vehicles do not cool down too much and the engines do not overheat. With a top speed of 318 km / h and 3,6 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km / h, everything is in the green with the AMG GT R.

In addition, the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S T-Model, the Official Medical Car of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship ™, is ready for rapid emergency care, which is driven by the South African Alan van der Merwe. The FIA Medical Car follows the Formula 1® field on the starting lap because the racing cars are particularly close together in this critical racing phase. In this way, in the event of an incident, the doctors can reach the scene of the accident as quickly as possible and start initial medical care immediately. Technically, the Medical Car corresponds to the 375 kW (510 PS) series vehicle, which is also equipped with the optional ceramic high-performance composite brake system for use on the racetrack. Four individual racing bucket seats with four-point belts offer the driver and the team of doctors the best possible support and safety.

Both security vehicles have two additional screens in the interior. One shows the current TV picture of the race broadcast. The second screen shows the current track position of the individual racing cars on a graphic. In addition, both security vehicles are equipped with roof bars made of carbon fiber, specially developed by AMG, which house the obligatory flashing light.

During the race, the Official Medical Car of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship ™ and the Official Safety Car stand next to each other in the pit lane in standby mode.
