Virtual Roads: from the street to the video game

The Virtual Roads project is intended to offer drivers the opportunity for the first time to quickly and easily transfer their personal favorite routes from reality into a video game. Everything you need: a smartphone with the appropriate app. Developing a new video game can take months, if not years. For example, the routes for racing simulators are scanned and digitized by experts using lasers. Porsche now wants to significantly accelerate this complex procedure on the way to making Virtual Roads market-ready. Thanks to the Virtual Roads innovation project, any route can be recorded in the future using a smartphone behind the windshield and the corresponding app and then transferred fully automatically to the virtual world. For this purpose, the recordings made of the street and the surroundings are converted into a 3D environment using software. This process takes less than one percent of the time of a traditional laser digitizing process.

Drive your favorite routes virtually

“If you ask people what the most beautiful route is, everyone comes up with their own personal route. Above all, it is the characteristic features of the topography that make it so appealing - regardless of whether it is a special alpine pass or a legendary coastal road," says Robert Ader, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at Porsche, in whose area the project is responsible. “We also want to ensure this recognition effect. With a significantly simplified digitization process that allows everyone to drive their favorite route virtually.”

This is made possible by specially developed software that, among other things, uses artificial intelligence to record the road and its immediate surroundings, such as crash barriers and trees, and then creates it as quickly and faithfully as possible in the form of a digital 3D representation. The program developed by Way Ahead Technologies can access an extensive graphic archive for this purpose. Data protection plays an important role in the development: the program ensures that other road users cannot find their way from the real to the virtual world.

Experience exceptional routes virtually in a Porsche

The file created with the help of the new application for one's own favorite route is currently compatible with the racing game "Assetto Corsa", among other things. This means that all possibilities of the virtual world are open to Porsche drivers and fans of the brand. The route can be experienced again and again on any suitably equipped simulator or via smartphone. This applies to the fantastically beautiful vacation trip along the American west coast as well as to the spectacular ride on the circuit of the GP Ice Race in Zell am See. As a result, the innovation project opens up another major advantage: Even routes that are only open on individual days and perhaps not even to the general public can be experienced in a Porsche and shared with others.

As usual in racing games, the user can choose any vehicle for his virtual drive, whose performance and driving characteristics are used as a basis for the simulation. The route characteristics are also implemented as realistically as possible: a suitably equipped simulator acknowledges an uneven road surface with vibrations, and a curve that is approached too quickly with a ride off-road. Ambitious drivers have the opportunity to tackle a particularly demanding route in a sporty manner, save times and measure themselves against others. In addition, the technology offers a wide range of possible uses in other scenarios.

Digitization of racetracks

"After several years of development work, our software is now so advanced that it can digitize routes of up to eight kilometers in length for virtual roads in less than an hour, depending on the complexity," says Roger Rueegg from Way Ahead Technologies. "At the same time, we are currently reviewing other options and functions." It is conceivable, for example, to record and use data from vehicle sensors such as lateral acceleration or chassis control in the future. Way Ahead Technologies is an example of how Porsche works with young, innovative companies. The sports car manufacturer has built a diverse startup ecosystem.
