7 tank myths under the magnifying glass!

"According to the regulars' table," there are many empty phrases and "guidelines" that you should follow. The mobile phone when refueling is a hazard, branded petrol stations have better petrol for the engine and it is generally cheapest to refuel on Mondays. But what of this is fact and what is just far-fetched? This is exactly what the ADAC has now dealt with and published interesting answers.

Examination of the Myths

  • Gasoline from branded gas stations is better. The first myth deals with the quality of petrol and states that petrol from well-known brand petrol stations such as Shell, Total, Aral or Esso is better for the engine, i.e. from independent petrol stations. However, in Germany there is a legal regulation, which regulates the quality of the fuel. Thus have all gas stations Minimum fuel quality requirements. The additives that branded filling stations often add also have no effect on the quality, they only (possibly) have a slightly positive effect on the range or the lifespan of the engine. And finally ... stimmt not!
  • To save money, should fill up on Mondays. Once upon a time, this tactic could be successful. Nowadays, however, prices tend to fluctuate in daily cycles. Gasoline prices are usually highest in the morning, when many people drive to work, as this is when demand is greatest. The best time is often between 18 and 20 clockAnd finally ... stimmt not!
  • No cell phones at the pump. If you look closely, you can see a prohibition sign for mobile phones on every petrol pump. The rationale behind these signs is the possibility of the phone falling and the battery detaching, causing sparks in the worst-case scenario. However, this has never happened in the past. And finally ... stimmt!
  • Waste of fuel due to low tire pressure. Driving with under-inflated tires consumes more fuel than necessary. This is one of the main reasons why tire pressure should be checked regularly. Even 0,2 bar too little increases the rolling resistance and thus increases consumption unnecessarily. And finally ... stimmt!
  • Storing supplies is prohibited! Especially when petrol prices rise again and you have caught a favorable time window, it would be practical to simply fill up a second or third tank of fuel in canisters and store them at home. However, this storage Do not exceed 100 liters, as more fuel cannot be stored at home. In addition, too long storage can be harmful to the engine. And finally ... stimmt not!
  • Engine destroyed by sugar in the tank. What you should always remember is that foreign bodies generally have no place in the tank. Accordingly, no sugar. Its molecules can clog the fuel filter and injectors. And finally ... stimmt!
  • Danger of explosion in case of collision. Many action films celebrate exactly that. Even in more or less harmless accidents, cars explode in droves. In reality, however, the tank must first be damaged so that the contents can combine with the air to form an explosive mixture. It is therefore relatively rare for a car to actually explode after a crash. And finally ... stimmt not!

Of course, that wasn't the end of it!
