Honda ADV350 scooter model 2022: little brother of the X-ADV!

  1. Preface

When Honda presented the X-ADV in 2016 - part big-bore scooter, part adventure bike and with unusual bodywork in ADV style - a new vehicle segment was established that Europe didn't even know it would be enthusiastic about. There have hardly been any comparably innovative and, above all, successful concepts in the last ten years. Nothing leads to more than success, so Honda is now following up with a similarly designed ADV scooter in the medium displacement class.

The newly developed ADV350 follows the concept of the "New Urban Adventure" and combines the sophistication and functionality of a modern and universal scooter with a robust ADV style. As a new model, the ADV350 is aimed at a potentially broad customer base, but especially at younger users who are enthusiastic about unconventional, attractive and broadband two-wheelers and who, in addition to primary mobility, are also available for fun-loving leisure activities in order to create new things in the city and beyond all borders explore.

  1. Model overview

With its striking visual appearance, the ADV350 stands out pleasantly from the crowd. Corners and edges and the color scheme promote the off-road look. The X-ADV obviously served as an inspiring model for the design, but a shot of the long-legged CRF motocrossers also played a role in the design. The functionality has not been forgotten. There is space for two full-face helmets under the seat and a USB charging socket in the glove compartment. The smartkey contributes to simplified operation in everyday life. The height of the windshield is four times adjustable and the LCD cockpit also integrates the Honda smartphone voice control system.

The front section is adorned with unmistakable ADV styling. The upright sitting position gives you the best overview and the feeling of having everything under control with the necessary agility. The chassis with tubular steel frame, 37 mm upside-down fork and two shock absorbers with additional reservoir is designed for an inspiring driving experience and the best feedback. The 15-inch front wheel and 14-inch rear wheel are fitted with tubeless coarse-tread tires of size 120 / 70-15 and 140 / 70-14, which enable the best grip in all conditions. Hydraulically actuated single-disc brakes at the front and rear as well as a two-channel anti-lock braking system enable safe deceleration on all roads and detours over dirt roads.

The driving performance allows driving fun and lively progress, in the city as well as on highways and in mild off-road passages. The advanced Smart Power + (eSP +) SOHC four-valve engine with 330 cm3 Displacement impresses with the lively peak output of 29 PS (21,5 kW) and the maximum torque of 31,5 Nm. Honda's multi-level adjustable traction control (Selectable Torque Control / HSTC) and a rear light with emergency stop signal function enrich the standard equipment. The new ADV350 is offered in three colors:

  • Spangle Silver Metallic
  • Matt Carbonium Gray Metallic
  • Matt Carnelian Red Metallic

3.1 Styling & equipment

  • LED double headlights, long-legged adventure look
  • Windscreen can be adjusted in four different heights
  • LCD cockpit instrument, Honda Smartphone Voice Control System
  • Storage space for two full-face helmets, USB-C charging socket, smart key system

The styling of the ADV350 conveys more than just a touch of adventure. The double LED headlights are mounted high above the front wheel. The bodywork is cut out at the side to better accentuate the upside down fork. The painted side panels also emphasize the robust off-road feeling and convey a long-legged impression, similar to the X-ADV or the crisp CRF450R motocrossers.

The Honda developers have peppered the ADV350 with practical details. The height of the windshield can be adjusted in four steps (over a 133 mm range). In this way, the driver is well protected at high speeds on expressways or enjoys the refreshing air and the open view of pulsating life when walking at a moderate pace in an urban environment.

There is 48 liters of storage space under the seat, so that two full-face helmets can be conveniently stowed away. If you leave it with a helmet, you can use an integrated partition plate to keep other utensils separate. In the front area there is a glove compartment with a USB-C charging socket, which can be used to charge the vital smartphone. The seat height is a user-friendly 795 mm so that you can reach the ground safely with your feet when you stop at traffic lights.

Keyword connectivity: The LCD dashboard of the ADV350 integrates the Honda smartphone voice control system, which connects the driver to his smartphone and enables phone calls and listening to music via voice control if the helmet is equipped with a headset. Honda's RoadSync app is sufficient to activate the system and connect it via Bluetooth. Instead of voice control, smartphone management can also be carried out using the buttons on the left handlebar switch.

A practical feature is the Honda Smartkey, which controls the main ignition switch and the seat lock and automatically locks the ADV350 when the driver leaves the vehicle. The smart key, which is worn on the body, also locks and unlocks the optional 50 liter smart top box. An answer-back function, which lights up the turn signals once at the push of a button, makes it easier to find the vehicle in overcrowded parking spaces or in the dark with restricted visibility.

3.2 chassis

  • Light tubular steel frame, 37 mm upside-down fork and two shock absorbers with additional containers support easy handling and driving comfort
  • Six-spoke cast aluminum wheels and coarse-profile tires
  • Disc brakes front and rear, rear light with emergency stop signal function

The chassis of the ADV350 is designed in such a way that it can cope with all conceivable road conditions, including light off-road passages, of course. As with all Honda scooters, simple operation, safe driving behavior and reliable function are part of the core competency. The frame is made of tubular steel. The wheelbase is 1.520 mm, the steering head angle 26,5 °, the caster 90 mm and the weight with a full tank of 186 kg.

A sturdy 37 mm upside-down fork takes over the front wheel control. A high-quality aluminum swing arm is installed at the rear. In addition to the fork, two shock absorbers with additional reservoirs and progressive springs on the rear wheel ensure suspension comfort in smooth and patchwork conditions. The spring travel is unusually generous at 125 and 130 mm (f / h).

Matching the vehicle, the cast aluminum rims have a completely new design, an X-shaped 6-spoke cross pattern. The tubeless knobby tires with the dimensions 120 / 70-15 (front) and 140 / 70-14 (rear) offer a smooth ride thanks to the wide tread width and cute, generously dimensioned air chambers.

A 256 mm brake disc takes care of the front deceleration, paired with a 240 mm one at the rear. An ABS system is of course on board. As with the X-ADV, the rear turn signals of the Honda ADC350 have an emergency stop signal function. In the event of extremely hard braking maneuvers, the rear direction indicators flash at a high frequency to warn following road users of an abrupt stop.

3.3 Engine

  • enhanced Smart Power + (eSP +) SOHC four-valve engine with 330 cm3 Capacity
  • 29 HP power (21,5 kW) at 7.500 rpm31,5 Nm max.torque
  • Honda HSTC traction control
  • 11,7 liter tank capacity, consumption 3,4 liters / 100 km, long range

The "enhanced Smart Power + Motor" of the ADV350 shines as a modern four-stroke single-cylinder with smooth running, friendly performance characteristics and plenty of pulling power and, thanks to advanced technologies to reduce friction, also with economical consumption - only 3,4 liters are consumed per 100 km. The 11,7 liter tank allows an operating range of over 340 kilometers.

The engine output is 29 PS (21,5 kW) at 7.500 tours, the maximum torque 31,5 Nm at 5,250 rpm. Bore and stroke are measured with 77 mm x 70,8 mm, the compression ratio with 10,5 to 1.

Valve train with roller rocker arms, crankshaft journals with slide bearings and sealed crankcase support smooth running and long-term mechanical reliability. Also noteworthy: As with the CRF450R, engine oil is also sprayed from below onto the piston crown, which improves internal cooling and helps optimize combustion performance. The oil volume is 1,85 liters.

The path of the fuel / air mixture leads via a 5,5 liter airbox and the 36 mm throttle valve to the 28 mm inlet valves of the single-cylinder engine with 330 cm3 Displacement. Targeted turbulence in the intake area results in even and efficient combustion. In order to reduce the exhaust gas resistance, the catalytic converter-equipped silencer uses double chambers, which supports cleaning.

Roller rocker arms and plain bearings help to keep friction losses as low as possible. The internal friction is reduced by an offset cylinder (offset by 5 mm), a hydraulic chain tensioner for the valve train and an oil suction pump. A balance shaft reduces vibrations and contributes to a pleasant driving experience. User-friendly centrifugal clutch, automatic V-Matic gearbox and maintenance-free belt drive ensure the transmission of the drive force.

The simple operation makes driving the ADV350 problem-free, just turn the throttle grip. The engine is equipped with HSTC traction control (Honda Selectable Torque Control). The system compares the revolutions of the front and rear wheels, calculates the slip ratio and regulates the engine power accordingly via the electronic PGM-FI fuel injection. This prevents a slipping rear wheel and possible loss of grip, for example on patched asphalt or wet roads. A TC symbol flashes when traction control intervenes. The engine of the new Honda ADV 350 complies with the strict Euro 5 emissions standard that came into force on January 1, 2020.
