  1. Preface

Playfully easy to use, funny, cuddly and functional at the same time, the original pocket-sized leisure motorcycle was presented by Honda in 1963 with the small-wheeled Monkey and - redefined for subsequent generations - with the Dax and Ape models as well as the Monkey, which was itself reborn in 2028 , continued.

“Generation Y” in the USA, “Dek Neaw” in Thailand, or “Street-Kei” in Japan: we're talking about a young Internet generation that loves to break with conventions. With the MSX2013 (which stands for "Mini Street X-treme 125"), released in 125, Honda targeted this generation and offered a beginner-friendly, exciting bike with a unique design and a good price / performance ratio.

The MSX125, dubbed “Grom” in Japan and the USA, turned out to be a hit all over the world. As a practical means of transport for the city and as an individual lifestyle product, the bike became a favorite of many: In the first year of sales, the MSX125, together with the CBF125, was one of the five best-selling 125cc bikes in Europe.

After a few years of silent success and several improvements to the styling, the current MSX125 Grom, as its official name is now also in Europe, followed as an update. Revised and with a fresh concept, it remained Honda's little machine for big dreams. In the 2022 model year, the MSX125 Grom is technically unchanged, but shines in the new, fresh color "Pearl Queen Bee Yellow".

  1. Model overview

The bodywork gives the MSX125 Grom a smart design language. The side covers (also on the tank) are easy to remove. This means that there is hardly any limit to customization by customers. The updated LCD display features a tachometer and gear indicator.

The air-cooled engine with five-speed gearbox offers the same engine power as its predecessor. The chassis is also unchanged with typical minibike dimensions, but allows the suspension, braking and handling qualities of an adult motorcycle. The MSX125 Grom of the 2022 model year is available in three colors:

  • Pearl Queen Bee Yellow **NEW**
  • Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic
  • Gayety Red
  1. Features

3.1 Styling & equipment

  • Appealing bodywork
  • High customizing potential, as both side panels and the tank flanks come with
only six screws are attached per side
  • LCD display with tachometer and gear indicator

The bodywork of the MSX125 Grom shines with a cool design and individuality. Pleasing retro-chic combines the sturdy LED headlights and the reduced seat unit with subframe, side panels and tank covers. Because customizing is very popular, the MSX125 Grom was designed with individual personalization in mind, taking customer requirements into account. The side parts and tank flanks are fixed with six screws on each side, the edges of which create a curious and unique design touch

The gold finish of the USD front fork and the yellow shock absorber spring form a handsome contrast to the blackened engine, the exhaust, the pretty cast aluminum rims and the swing arm. The LCD display is easy to read despite its compact dimensions. In addition to a speedometer, two trip meters, a fuel gauge and a clock, it also has a tachometer and a gear indicator.

3.2 Engine

  • Air-cooled 125 cm3-Two valve engine with PGM-FI injection
  • 9,8 HP / 7,2 kW engine power and 10,5 Nm max.torque
  • 5-speed transmission
  • Meets the Euro 5 standard

The MSX125 Grom has an air-cooled 125 cm3-Two-valve engine with 50 mm bore and 63,1 mm stroke and a compression ratio of 10,0: 1. The peak output of 9,8 PS (7,2 kW) is achieved at 7.250 rpm, the peak torque of 10,5 Nm is at 5.500 rpm. The motor of the MSX125 Grom offers perfect all-round capabilities and allows relaxed progress. The five-speed gearbox supports the lively performance, the top speed is an impressive 94 km / h.

The MSX125 Grom has a pinion with 15 teeth and a chainring with 38 teeth. This gear ratio, in conjunction with the 12 inch wheels, enables both lively driving and leisurely cruising in high gears, which is perfect for snaking effortlessly through city traffic.

The MSX125 Grom is extremely economical, as only one liter of fuel is consumed per 66,6 km (measured in WMTC mode). This is mainly due to the use of low-friction technologies, such as an offset cylinder and roller rocker arms for the valve train. The PGM-FI fuel injection guarantees efficient combustion. A 2,5 liter airbox with wet paper filter is optimized for reliable function. The filter only needs to be changed after 16.000 kilometers. The manifold and muffler are made from two separate parts. The Grom engine meets the Euro 5 emissions standard.

3.3 chassis

  • Stable mono backbone steel frame, seat height 761 mm
  • 31 mm USD fork and monoshock rear shock
  • 12 inch wheels and hydraulic disc brakes front and rear

The tried and tested chassis of the MSX125 Grom will remain unchanged in 2022. The petite fun bike is designed as a practical and beginner-friendly bike for urban and rural areas. At the same time, a passenger should be able to ride along without any problems. The mono-backbone steel frame ensures stability and driving safety. The upper part with a square cross-section connects the head tube directly to the swing arm pivot points. Essential components are visibly attached to the frame, which contributes to the minimalist look.

The frame construction enables space-saving accommodation of the PGM-FI fuel injection and other components below the tank. In this way, the tank capacity could be expanded to 6 liters. The wheelbase is 1.200 mm, the steering head angle 25 ° and the caster 81 mm. In terms of weight, a full tank weighs just 103 kg on the scales. The low seat height of 761 mm supports the user-friendly, easy handling. Thanks to its pocket format, the MSX125 Grom is ideal for motorhome owners, as it can be easily loaded and unloaded, transported and of course used.

High-quality suspension components are rarely found in the fun bike segment. The MXS125 Grom is different: A 31mm USD fork reduces the unsprung mass and offers improved damping thanks to the larger pressure-absorbing surface of the pistons. The upper and lower triple clamps are the same size as a standard USD fork, which further improves handling and driving experience. The robust steel swing arm with box profile (50 mm x 25 mm) is equipped with a neatly coordinated mono shock absorber.

The 125-inch cast aluminum wheels in five-spoke design with wide 12-inch rims are essential for the appearance and function of the MSX2,5 Grom. The tires in the dimensions 120 / 70-12 (front) and 130 / 70-12 (rear) contribute to the dynamic look and corresponding performance. A hydraulic double-piston brake caliper at the front (with a gold finish) and a single-piston brake caliper at the rear access a 220 mm disc at the front and a 190 mm disc at the rear. The ABS system works through an IMU unit.
