Honda X-ADV 2022 - now more colorful and even more versatile!

  1. Introduction

In the case of motorcycles, innovative concepts rarely lead to the emergence of a new category. However, when Honda presented the new X-ADV in 2016, a unique adventure scooter, that is exactly what happened. Typical adventure bike properties form the basis: robust design, upright seating position, excellent all-round visibility and intelligent all-round capabilities. Added to this are the needs of commuters who use scooters or motorcycles to get to work. Likewise agile and easy handling, sufficient storage space as well as comfortable and efficient locomotion. Plus the suitability as a hobby and fun device even on unpaved roads.

The developers at Honda combined everything, which resulted in a new type of vehicle with a robust and at the same time elegant appearance, similar to an SUV on two wheels, which is good for a sense of well-being in the city like unpaved paths. Even though
the X-ADV is equipped with everything that makes life in an urban environment comfortable, look, performance and chassis are sufficient to awaken a thirst for adventure on every journey.

The X-ADV, the essence of freedom in an exciting form, attracted a lot of attention and became a bestseller. As proof of the off-road capability, the Italian Renato Zocchi took part in the Rally Gibraltar in 2019 with a slightly modified X-ADV. After 7.000 kilometers over adventurous terrain, he achieved overall victory in class 2! For the 2021 model year, the Honda X-ADV has been extensively revised with further increased engine power, reduced weight and a design update, making it even more practical. All of this made the new X-ADV even more unique and attractive, which is why it is now upgraded to model year 2022 with three new colors, but remains technically unchanged.

  1. Model overview

The facelift for the 2021 model of the X-ADV resulted in 4 hp more peak power for the Euro 5 engine and an upward speed range of 600 rpm. This was achieved by revising the valve timing and optimizing the intake and exhaust areas. A shorter gear ratio for the first, second and third gear results in optimized acceleration, while a higher gear ratio for the fourth, fifth and sixth gear enables relaxed driving at a higher speed and moderate fuel consumption.

An electronically controlled throttle (Throttle By Wire) enables the four driving modes RAIN, STANDARD, GRAVEL and SPORT, which influence the engine characteristics, as well as an individually configurable USER mode. In addition, the X-ADV has a refined, now three-stage adjustable HSTC traction control (Honda Selectable Traction Control). The standard DCT dual clutch transmission with differently programmed automatic shift patterns is also linked to the driving modes.

A newly designed frame and improvements to details helped save a kilo in weight. The bodywork design of the X-ADV got sharper and more modern. The double LED headlights light up with daytime running lights (DRL), as on the CRF1100 Africa Twin.

A laterally contoured seat improves accessibility to the floor. The storage space has been enlarged and equipped with a USB-C charging socket. Moving the parking brake to the right side increases comfort and creates space for a glove compartment. The TFT display has Honda's smartphone voice control system. The 2022 X-ADV is available in five colors:

  • Matt ballistic black metallic **NEW**
  • Matt iridium gray metallic **NEW**
  • Harvest beige **NEW**
  • Pearl Deep Mud Gray
  • Grand Prix Red
  1. Features

3.1 Engine

  • Throttle by wire throttle, 59 hp and 69 Nm torque
  • Consumption only 3,6 liters per 100 km, Euro 5 compliant
  • 48 HP version for A2 driver's license holders possible

The torque-optimized construction of the liquid-cooled SOHC 8-valve parallel two-cylinder engine guarantees plenty of power in the lower to medium speed range. Its long-stroke design and specially shaped combustion chambers delight with plenty of pulling power even at low speeds. The forward-inclined installation position of the motor shifts the center of gravity further down for optimal stability. The peak power is 59 hp at 6.750 rpm, the maximum torque 69 Nm at 4.750 rpm. With a flying start at 30 km / h, the X-ADV needs only 1,7 seconds for a distance of 20 meters and only 3,2 seconds over a distance of 50 meters.

Two balance shafts counteract vibrations without affecting the typical pulsation that is caused by the irregular firing order of the engine with its crankshaft cranked by 270 °. Bore and stroke are 77 x 80 mm. Many components are designed to perform several tasks at the same time: the camshaft drives the water pump, while one of the balance shafts drives the oil pump. The minimization of moving engine parts makes the engine light, efficient and reliable. The Honda X-ADV meets the Euro 5 emissions standard and consumes only 3,6 l / 100 km. With the 13,2 liter tank, this corresponds to a potential range of 366 km.

3.2 Motor electronics

  • The throttle control via Throttle By Wire technology enables four driving modes and additional individual adjustment via the USER mode.
  • HSTC traction control adjustable in three stages

Thanks to the throttle by wire control, which transmits the driver's throttle commands via the control electronics to the throttle valve for mixture preparation, the engine characteristics of the X-ADV can be adjusted. Four standard driving modes and an individually configurable user mode are available for this. The mode is selected using a switch unit on the left side of the handlebar. STANDARD offers a balanced mean value between power delivery, engine braking and intervention of the HSTC traction control; the ABS regulates at the highest level.

  • SPORT means dynamic engine characteristics and engine braking with little intervention by the HSTC; ABS control at the highest level.
  • RAIN throttles to low power delivery and gentle engine braking; HSTC and ABS regulate at the highest level.
  • GRAVEL offers high engine power and engine braking with low HSTC and ABS intervention.
  • USER enables individual settings for engine power and engine braking from low / medium / high and low / medium / high / off for traction control.

The HSTC traction control offers a softer and finer control, as it is able to optimally regulate the torque arriving at the rear wheel via the throttle by wire system. There are three levels of traction control to choose from:

  • Level 1 allows minimal intervention for controlled spinning of the rear wheel, for example on gravel.
  • Level 2 is the default setting and provides safe traction for most driving conditions.
  • Level 3 ensures maximum control on slippery roads.

3.3 Dual clutch transmission (DCT)

  • Five uDifferent shift patterns depending on the driving mode
  • More USER mode for individually configured driving programs

Honda has already sold over 200.000 motorcycles with dual clutch transmissions (DCT stands for Dual Clutch Transmission) in Europe. In 2009 the system debuted in the VFR1200F. The acceptance of DCT technology, which only Honda offers in the motorcycle sector, is high. For the models that are optionally available with a dual clutch transmission, 2020% of customers preferred this equipment to a conventional manual transmission in 53.

Honda X-ADV 2022 - now more colorful and even more versatile!

The dual clutch transmission makes driving easier by automatically changing gear. The electronic-hydraulic control also takes care of the dosed actuation of the clutch for starting. That is why there is no clutch lever on machines with DCT. Simply turning the throttle after a riding mode is activated is enough to get going. The simple operation quickly becomes a pleasant matter of course for users, something that is reluctant to do without.

Technically, the DCT system uses two clutches: One for starting and for gears one, three and five, the other for second, fourth and sixth gear. Each clutch is controlled by an electronic-hydraulic circuit. With automated shifting, the system preselects the next gear with the help of the clutch that is currently open. While this one closes electronically, the other one opens at the same time - so that the newly selected gear can intervene without interrupting tractive power.

The result is smooth, quick, and seamless gear changes. The double clutch only transmits minimal drive interruptions to the rear wheel. The machine's jerking and nodding movements are minimized, and gear changes take place directly and evenly. Additional advantages are: Stress-free driving in the city prevents the driver from becoming less alert. Even stalling when starting up can no longer occur thanks to DCT. Interconnecting is also excluded, which as a bonus excludes possible damage to the transmission gears.

The double clutch system offers two modes of operation. On the one hand the automatic setting (AT) with preprogrammed shift patterns, which constantly monitors the speed, the selected gear and the engine speed in order to automatically control the optimal shifting process. On the other hand, there is the manual operating mode (MT) for targeted gear changes using the paddles on the left side of the handlebar.

Thanks to the connection to the electronic throttle grip, the automated DCT switching patterns are linked to the selected driving mode.

There are five automated switching patterns available with the X-ADV. Level 1 is extremely comfort-oriented and linked to the RAIN driving mode; upshifting and downshifting takes place at comparatively low speeds. Level 4, on the other hand, is linked to the SPORT mode. Here the DCT upshifts at higher engine speeds and downshifts earlier in order to increase the engine braking effect. Level 2 is linked to the STANDARD driving mode. Level 3 is located between the STANDARD and SPORT driving modes.

Honda X-ADV 2022 - now more colorful and even more versatile!

The sporty G-shift pattern is used in the GRAVEL driving mode. This has the additional property of reducing the slip on the rear wheel because the clutches only work when the throttle valve is fully open or closed. This gives the driver a more direct feeling for the traction on the rear wheel and has the ability to slide in a controlled manner. While this function previously had to be activated by the separate G-Switch, it is now part of the G-switching pattern on the DCT of the X-ADV.

In USER mode, which can be configured as required, the driver can put together his own DCT switching pattern from the parameters power delivery, engine braking, ABS function and three-stage traction control.

3.4 Styling & equipment

  • Strikingly sharpened, slim design
  • Connectivity via 5 inch TFT display including smartphone voice control
  • LED double headlights with daytime running lights
  • 22 liter storage space, with USB charging socket

The styling of the X-ADV, developed by Honda's European development center in Rome, has been revised since the model update in 2021 - more modern, sharper and cooler. The LED double headlights have daytime running lights (DRL). They adapt to the intensity of the ambient light and produce a pleasantly bright, perfect light, which increases safety. The X-ADV uses LED lighting technology all around, including the indicators and the rear light.

With a seat height of 820 mm and a 910 mm wide handlebar, the driver enjoys a good overview of what is happening on the road. The ergonomic seat has a slim shoulder contour, which ensures that your feet can easily reach the ground. The height-adjustable windshield can be adjusted in five positions without tools. The adjustment range is 139 mm at an angle of 11 degrees.

Honda's Smartphone Voice Control System enables the use of a smartphone while on the move. It can be used to make phone calls and check e-mails, or to control music and navigation. The information is shown on the 5 inch TFT display. A headset is required for use, and the smartphone must be connected to the vehicle via Bluetooth. The system can also be controlled using the buttons on the left switch unit for voice commands.

Plastic hand protectors keep out wind, cold and rain and protect hands and levers from falling rocks during off-road excursions. A 2,5 mm thick aluminum protective plate protects the underside of the X-ADV.

The 22 liter storage space under the bench offers space for a full-face helmet. An integrated LED light helps further in the dark. A USB-C charging socket can also be found in the storage compartment. The parking brake lever moved to the right Bodywork side created space for a useful glove compartment. The standard center stand with tilt sensor allows it to be parked on a slope without the risk of tipping over.

The smartkey system is easy to use. No additional key is required when carried in the driver's pocket. As soon as the smartkey is within range of the vehicle, the main switch can be operated. This gives the driver control over the ignition and steering lock, as well as the fuel filler cap and the seat lock. The smartkey also unlocks the optional smart top case. The indicators also have an answer-back function.

The rear turn signals of the X-ADV have an emergency stop signal function (ESS). At a negative acceleration of 6,0 m / s2 and a minimum speed of 53 km / h with the brake applied at the same time, the hazard warning lights flash to warn other road users of an abrupt stop.

3.5 chassis

  • The tubular steel frame saves weight and creates space
  • 41 mm cartridge USD fork and Pro-Link swingarm
  • Double disc brake at the front, radially mounted four-piston calipers, ABS
  • 120/70 R17 and 160/60 R15 front and rear tires

Since the model revision in 2021, the Honda X-ADV has been equipped with a newly designed tubular steel frame, which, thanks to the different tube thicknesses used, creates space for the storage compartment and helps save a kilo in weight.

The wheelbase is 1.590 mm, the steering head angle 27 degrees and the caster 104 mm. 39 ° steering angle and a turning radius of 2,8 meters help the X-ADV achieve exemplary agility in heavy traffic. Long suspension travel (153,5 mm at the front / 150 mm at the rear) is combined with ample ground clearance (165 mm). 236 kg with a fully fueled ready-to-drive vehicle means three kilograms less than its predecessor.

The 41 mm USD fork with cartridge system ensures top handling on off-road excursions. Rebound and spring preload are adjustable. The rear damper with adjustable spring preload cushions the aluminum swing arm via a Pro-Link lever system with an increasingly progressive effect.

The 17 inch front wheel and the 15 inch rear wheel are fitted with stainless steel spokes. Tires with a block pattern ensure a crisp look and increase driving stability off the beaten track. L-shaped valves make it easy to control air pressure. The tires are 120/70 R17 at the front and 160/60 R15 at the rear. Two radially mounted four-piston brake calipers access the double disc system at the front with 296 mm brake discs, an ABS anti-lock braking system is of course on board.
