The internal combustion engine in the car constantly needs air in order to be able to burn the fuel. During this process, however, it can happen that particles and other contaminants get into the engine. Therefore it is important that the sucked air is filteredbefore entering the system. The condition of the air filter is therefore directly linked to the performance of the car. Hence the regular maintenance of the air filter essential. When the air filter changed, or in the case of one permanent filters cleaned, can be determined from the vehicle manufacturer's specifications or from the manufacturer of the air filter (in case of cleaning) remove. A rule of thumb: The air filter of a frequently used vehicle should be cleaned approx. 40.000 to 60.000 km at the latest be replaced. The dirt in the air filter ensures that the engine not enough air receives. As a result, the performance of the vehicle decreases over time. The worst case is total engine failure. But even minor dirt can make itself felt in your wallet, because the dirt leads to increased fuel consumption. To replace the air filter, you must have access to the Airbox of the vehicle. This is usually easy to find and no lengthy disassembly is required. As a point of reference you can use the Air hose on the throttle body to use. This circumstance makes the replacement of the air filter very uncomplicated. Although the replacement isn't rocket science, it should be done by a professional. Mistakes during assembly can quickly lead to the engine attracting dirt as well as clean air. The cost of a new air filter is moderate. You can get a new air filter for between 10 and 80 euros. You usually pay the higher prices for vehicles that use two filters. The most relevant manufacturers on the market are Knecht and Mann, Filtron and Mahle. Replacing the filter system takes no more than 30 minutes. If you include the labor costs of the workshop, total costs of 30 to 100 euros can be calculated. In reality, however, the costs are usually in the lower price segment. However, conventional air filters are not the only way to protect the engine from contamination. In addition to the classic models, there are also air filter mats like the Pipercross Performance Air Cleaner. The advantage of the air filter mats is that they can be cleaned more easily and thus reusable are. In the long term, the higher acquisition costs of the air filter mats can be offset by their reusability. Long-term filter mats should be used above all where vehicles drive in open terrain and are exposed to particularly heavy dirt.
