From the mid-60s, the BMW slogan "For sheer driving pleasure" became the core message of the car manufacturer's advertising. There is no doubt that this also applies to most customers of Bayerische Motoren Werke. However, individual engine series marred this joy with problems that could even lead to complete engine damage or at least resulted in expensive repairs. Fortunately, this only affected a manageable percentage of engines. And of course it's not just BMW, because hardly any other manufacturer is error-free across the entire range. All have more or less reliable engines in the range. But let's stay with them BMW engines.
Timing chains as problem children!
Actually, the long-lived ones should timing chains eliminate known problems with toothed belts, not only at BMW. But they only allow small tolerances in construction and require high precision in manufacture. Even small deviations cause increased wear, which sooner or later leads to spontaneous wear tear off of the chain, most of which end in engine damage. One problem at BMW was the N47 series of diesel engines (four-cylinder in-line), which were installed in vehicles in the one, three and five series until the end of August 2013. Common warning signs of premature wear were untypical metallic noises (rattling or grinding noises). If they weren't noticed and the timing chain wasn't renewed, they were mostly heavy ones Engine damage the consequence.
Small cause - big damage!
And there were due to powerful engines installed between autumn 2009 and autumn 2011 a small screw some big problems. She was on Camshaft actuators of six-cylinder engines, which were installed in many models. Series 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, X3, X5, X6 and Z4 were affected. In extreme cases, the screw could break, causing severe damage in individual cases Engine damage. According to unconfirmed statements, almost 11.000 cars in Germany were affected.
Reduced mileage due to bearing damage!
Ironically, in BMW high-performance vehicles of the S85 model of the Performance series M (M5/M6), too high a wear of the bearing shells to a sometimes drastically reduced mileage. If the motors were subjected to a heavy load, as is typical for the model, significant damage to the bearings already occurred below 100.000 kilometers, resulting in total failures. The damage was sometimes difficult to analyze in advance, which is why engine damage occurred disproportionately often, even with well-maintained units
Tested exchange engines are cheaper!
If there is damage to the engine that can no longer be repaired, then the vehicle must be repaired thanks to a complete Exchange engines or assemblies not to be scrapped right away. The affected vehicle owner usually has the choice between brand-new units, tested used engines and cheap replacement engines from the parts market. The savings with used engines can usually be more than 50 percent lie. This is how you usually avoid one economic total loss and can continue to drive the beloved Munich.
Of course, that wasn't the end of it!
