An all-plastic pleasure: igus:bike is at the start!

Get ready for that igus:bike! The unique two-wheeler complete made of recycled plastics, will be launched in September. And at a fair price 1.195 EUR. But what exactly is behind the futuristic bike? From the frame to the wheels to the pedals - the bike consists entirely of Plastic. The result? No annoying rattling, no rust and almost no maintenance required. Why? All moving parts, including the planetary gear and freewheel, are off high performance polymers manufactured. The materials are designed for minimal friction and wear and do not require any lubricants as they are in the components solid lubricants are integrated. Even the drive belt is built into the frame in such a way that dirt doesn't stand a chance.

Highlight of the Eurobike: igus:bike

The result of many years of cooperation between igus and the Dutch start-up monthly (formerly Dutchfiets) is the environmentally friendly and lightweight single speed bike for the city. It was in the spotlight at Eurobike in Frankfurt and will be available from September. And you can Pre-order. In the future too E-Bikes and Children's bikes added, built on the same principle. Frank Blase, founder of igus, had the idea for this more than ten years ago. His vision was a durable bike that would not suffer corrosion damage from salty air. The futuristic wheel is mainly made from recycled plastics, such as old ones fishing nets, manufactured. mtrl uses its own machines with lubricant-free igus components for production using the rotational molding process, with the electricity required coming from renewable sources.

Sustainable production in the Netherlands

And the bike can be returned to the manufacturer at the end of its life, for which customers receive a credit card included in the purchase price deposit amount get back. The plastic components are then processed back into granules and reintegrated into the manufacturing process. But how do you know when a plastic bike is no longer safe? Bladder has a solution for this too: an intelligent one sensors enables one in the future Real-time condition monitoring. The owners can then read on their smartphone how many kilometers they still have with their igus: bike can return. Who would have thought that there was still so much to improve when it comes to cycling! Photo credit: manufacturer
