Increasingly popular - illegal tuning on e-bikes is steadily increasing!

According to estimates, more and more cyclists in Germany are riding illegally tuned e-bikes. It is estimated that there are already half a million souped-up models, which poses a high risk of accidents and high penalties as insurance will not cover you in the event of an accident. The German Bicycle Industry Association (ZIV) estimates the total number of e-bikes in Germany at 10 million, of which around 5% are probably tuned. However, the legal regulations allow the sale of illegal accessories for e-bikes, although tuning your own e-bike is prohibited. However, tuned e-bikes can also be used legally on private property, and it is possible to officially register the bikes as motor vehicles with insurance after the upgrade. In practice, however, tuning kits will almost exclusively used on public roads and the modified bikes are often not properly insured, which would be required by law.

illegal tuning on e-bikes

There are many reasons why more and more people are using e-bike tuning. Although an e-bike that supports up to 45 km/h (S-Pedelec) is even an option for long distances, it is not allowed on the cycle path. For many, however, driving on the road is too dangerous. Therefore, the option of an e-bike that supports up to 25 km/h (pedelec) and can be used on the cycle path remains. And the thought of easily and inexpensively compensating for the shortcoming in terms of speed with a DIY tuning set quickly comes to mind.

However, many are not aware of how difficult it can be to tune e-bikes to go faster. E-bikes are also not designed for permanent use, which leads to faster brake wear. Adding an illegal device to this leads to increased insecurity when driving, especially if you don't consider yourself a professional.

many forget the insurance

In the event of an accident, the financial consequences can be dramatic. The private liability insurance usually refuses to settle the damage. In the worst case, this can lead to financial ruin, especially in the case of serious injuries. Curbing the illegal tuning of e-bikes will probably require new laws that prohibit the sale of tuning parts. Although more police checks are being carried out, they are costly and hardly possible across the board.

However, it is difficult to find suitable laws, since the Ministry of Transport, according to "spiegel.de", refers to the EU, where no changes have been made so far. If you let the faster S-Pedelecs (up to 45 km/h) ride on the bike path, then that would also be an option. Since speed pedelecs are generally more expensive than tuned pedelecs, success is not guaranteed here either. In addition, speed limits would have to be introduced and strictly controlled on the cycle path.

Of course, that was far from it. Our tuning magazine has countless other tuning reports for two-wheelers in stock. We regularly deal with the topic of e-bikes, pedelecs and ATV tuning.
