The e-bike that has perfected the art of commuting: The VanMoof S5 & A5
[Display] Swapping four wheels for two 1 day a week can cut an individual's transport emissions by 67%. And if that wasn't reason enough - studies have shown that e-bike riders get as much exercise as people who ride ordinary bikes. So if you're looking for an e-bike that provides a smooth and effortless ride but gives a welcome boost into your commute, then we're pretty sure you should keep reading.
Founded in 2009 by brothers Taco and Ties Carlier, VanMoof is a Dutch company whose aim is to create the world's perfect city e-bike. And 13 years later their latest generation – the VanMoof S5 & A5 – combine unique VanMoof tech features while keeping the needs of the rider center stage.
Let's dive in
The VanMoof S5 and A5 come in two sleek colors, Light Gray and Dark Gray. From the first glance, the S5 is a continuation of the classic VanMoof design of the straight frame, the standover height is measured at 820mm, and is best for riders who are between 165-210 cm, whilst the A5 is 622mm and is most suited to riders who are 155cm-200cm. Both bikes have integrated batteries and in terms of charge time, it takes 6 ½ hours to charge to 100% and 2 ½ hours to charge to 50%.
Although different in frame shape, both bikes are packed with the same tech that will make you want to find any excuse to run an errand on your bike. Let's begin with what everyone is most interested in. Range. Both the S5 and A5 have a long range battery, the S5 has a range of 150km / 93 mile range, while the A5 has a range of 140km / 87 mile range (depending on what Power Assist level you're riding in). This means that you'll have enough juice to take the long way home - plus a bit extra.
The VanMoof S5 and A5 have a 250 W motor and four power assist levels, leaving it up to the hands of the rider to decide what is best for them. The max speed of the bikes is limited to comply with local regulations, top speed of the VanMoof S5 and A5 is 25km in the EU and UK, 32km in the US and 24km in Japan. Unlike their previous model, VanMoof has swapped out the Matrix Display for the Halo Rings that sit on either side of the handlebars. The left Halo Ring indicates how much battery you have left while the right shows you what speed you're going at as well as the power assist level that you're on.
80% of a VanMoof is designed and produced in house with the 5 series alone having 231 new custom-designed parts. The favorite amongst VanMoof riders? The Turbo Boost button. When pressed, the Turbo Boost, maxes the engine torque. This gives you an instant burst of acceleration that is handy when it comes to combating hills, clearing intersections and pulling away from traffic lights. And to be honest - it's pretty addictive. We've already spoken about our favorite button on one side of the handlebar – but what's on the other? Well, there you'll find the electric bell button. You can choose from three bell noises via the VanMoof app to make sure that you can alert pedestrians and other road users whenever necessary.
As for the gears, both bikes are equipped with a Gen 5 custom made E-Shifter compiled of three gears that works harmoniously with the motor and the torque sensor which give the rider a smooth and silent riding experience. So all that you need to focus on, is where you're off to next. And if you're the type of rider who's got security at the forefront of their mind, then VanMoof have designed a custom made Kick Lock. The Gen 5 Kick Lock is a button that sits in the rear wheel – once engaged, it locks the bike and switches the bike alarm on. You won't want to be a bike thief with a VanMoof around.
VanMoof bikes are well known for having integrated front and rear lights, and the 5 series is the same – abolishing the worry of ever forgetting your bike lights again. The Gen 5 integrated lights have the ISO 6742-1 certificate for the EU and UK, and additionally holds the K-mark certification for Germany.
VanMoof have set the standard when it comes to e-bike testing, with their bikes being held in custom-made testing chambers to make sure that they can stand whatever the cityscape that they might be ridden in. But what about app features that accompany your ride? Well, you can unlock your bike via the app, as well as change motor assistance, customize your gear preferences and keep track of your rides through the 'My Rides' feature. If you want to see your statistics in real time, then you can attach your phone via the phone mount between the handlebars, all you'll need for that is a SP Connect phone case.
