And once again we discovered a wonderful restomod project based on a popular classic. This time it is a second generation Mercury Comet from 1965. The Mercury Comet was manufactured by Mercury in three generations from 1960 to 1977 and was originally intended to be sold under the Edsel brand. The technical basis was the Ford Falcon from 1960 to 1966 and the Ford Fairlane from 1966 to 1969. For the years 1971 to 1977 the Ford Maverick donated the basis for the Comet. And this black painted specimen is one of the second generation of the Comet, which already uses the Ford Fairlane base. The Comet is 5,16 m long and was a typical mid-range vehicle at the time (so-called. Intermediate). And, of course, the engines were significantly larger than the first series. The basis was a six-cylinder with a displacement of 3300 cm³ and the larger eight-cylinder ranged from 4,7 to 6,4 liters.

A / FX style hood

Optical highlights were the curved rear fenders in the so-called Coke Bottle Line and the front section with the twin headlights arranged one above the other. And this one has been rebuilt to resemble the limited edition A / FX Cyclone that was built for the 1964-65 racing season. This is also the reason for the sporty attitude and the aggressive appearance of the Comet. The front got a fiberglass bumper and fenders and of course the eye-catching A / FX-style hood. Plus some Cyclone and 427 badges and a set of 15-inch Cragar SS chrome rims with Hoosier Pro Street tires at the front and 295/65 Mickey Thompson slicks at the rear. Large brake discs of a completely modified sports brake system are hidden behind the rims and the body has been kept as “clean” as possible.

everything is newly lined with leather

And a lot of working time and material went into the completely refined cabin. There was a red leather interior that even extends over the dashboard, the door panels and the back seat. The Mercury has a 120-mile Sun Super speedometer, oil pressure and temperature displays, fuel toggle switches and a start / stop system to shift gears using the Hurst gear lever and Cueball button. The highlight is definitely under the A / FX Cyclone hood. A mighty 482 ci V8 from 2008 by Robert Pond Motorsport is at work here. It is an RPM all-aluminum block with SCAT steel crankshaft, CP Carillo pistons with 10,5: 1 compression, CNC-polished stage II cylinder buttons and a double exhaust system with Flowmaster silencers.

628 PS and 845 Nm torque

According to the test run in December 2008, the engine is to deliver a violent 628 hp at 5.800 rpm and 623 lb-ft (845 Nm) torque at 4.700 rpm, which are transmitted to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential via a 5-speed tremec gearbox . The 1965 Mercury Comet is currently being auctioned off via Bring a Trailer. If we receive timely information on further changes to the Mercury Comet, there is of course an update for this report.
