Honda unveils the new Civic Type R (2023)!

Honda is celebrating 50 years of Civic and 25 years of Civic Type R: For this double anniversary, the Japanese car manufacturer has developed the most spectacular Civic Type R of all time. Launching in Europe in early 2023, the new model builds on a long tradition of high-performance, race-inspired vehicles.

Honda Civic Type R

The new Civic Type R is already setting standards. He recently set a new lap record for front-wheel drive vehicles at Suzuka. During the development phase, the engineers made extensive revisions. These include new lightweight components, a further developed powertrain and design optimizations that improve aerodynamics. The result is the most powerful Type R ever.

“With the new Civic Type R, our engineers have once again managed to deliver a unique driving experience in the compact sports segment,” said Tom Gardner, senior vice president at Honda Motor Europe. “Through extraordinary further developments and the use of motorsport-tested technologies, we have even surpassed the performance of the lightweight version of the previous model. It is precisely this quest for excellence that has made the Civic Type R so popular for 25 years.”

Powerful aerodynamic design

Developed as part of the Ultimate Sports 2.0 model concept, the new Civic Type R builds on the sleek and sporty silhouette of the recently unveiled new Honda Civic e:HEV. In order to underline the sporty look and improve the driving characteristics, the Type R is built significantly lower and wider. Additionally, the model is fitted with 19-inch matte black alloy wheels and bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

The Honda engineers worked on the concept of "Ultimate Sports Design" - expression of a powerful vehicle with front engine and front wheel drive. The large lower grille of the front bumper ensures the supply of air to the engine. The new, discreet bonnet, which is equipped with a ventilation opening, additionally optimizes the air flow. Other design details that help improve aerodynamics include large air vents behind the front wheels and a new, larger rear diffuser.

This is integrated directly into the underbody, and its shape harmonises perfectly with the bodywork above it. The new rear spoiler ensures even more downforce. It was tilted backwards to reduce drag. The rear wing is attached to new die-cast aluminum brackets while sitting lower and wider than the previous model. This emphasizes the new slim roofline and wider silhouette. The new Civic Type R is available in five colors: Championship White, Rallye Red, Racing Blue, Crystal Black and Sonic Gray Pearl.

Impressive cockpit experience

The interior of the new Type R is specially designed for driving pleasure and the best possible focus. The Civic e:HEV's high standards of comfort, functionality and refinement have been maintained and enhanced with dynamic, performance-oriented details and features such as classic Type R red trim. The cockpit is designed to support an intense driving experience: the driver sits lower than before while having a better view over the lower bonnet.

Blind spots and reflective elements have also been reduced. The light sports seats for the driver and front passenger offer optimal support and ensure comfort and freedom of movement both on the race track and on long journeys. The driver can choose between Comfort, Sport and +R modes for six performance parameters, including engine, steering and chassis. In addition, the new individual mode is available, which allows individual adjustment of these six parameters.

The performance data logger Honda LogR has been redesigned and combines the performance data collected by the sensors in the vehicle with a smartphone app. In this way, the driver can monitor and record a wide variety of measured values in real time. The most important functions include a stopwatch for recording lap times, a display of the 3D vehicle movement and the friction circles of all wheels, which shows the maximum transferable tire force, and a score function for evaluating and improving your own driving technique on the race track to compare it with others drivers and ultimately to improve accuracy and increase safety resulting in faster lap times.

Performance-oriented technical developments

The Civic Type R is known for its powerful, revving and responsive engines. The new model builds on the technology of its predecessor and has been further developed for even better performance. The revised turbocharger now features a compact housing to improve the overall efficiency of the unit. On the turbo itself, both the number of vanes and the shape have been optimized to further increase performance and improve airflow. The result is the most powerful VTEC TURBO engine ever used in the Type R. (rumors spoke of approx. 330 PS & 410 NM and Honda confirmed an output of 01.09.2022 PS & 320 NM on September 420st, XNUMX)

The revised exhaust system also helps to further increase the power-to-weight ratio, torque and top speed. The numerous optimizations make the new Civic Type R one of the most powerful vehicles per liter of displacement volume in its class. The further developed six-speed manual transmission makes drivers feel directly connected to the vehicle. The automatic speed adjustment always ensures the perfect speed when downshifting and supports the balance of the vehicle when entering corners. The transmission is controlled by a high-strength gear lever with an optimized shift pattern, ensuring safe and precise gear changes.

The two-piece brake discs of the previous generation have been retained in the further developed Brembo brake system. This ensures excellent response and a long service life of the braking system. Improved temperature control and air cooling ensure lasting, optimal performance even under high loads. The new triple exhaust design with improved sound modulation enhances the acoustic experience and intensifies the connection between driver and vehicle.
