No more competition: BMW's sports division is changing the model hierarchy!

There is movement in the BMW model world M sports department! BMW M GmbH, for many the holy grail when it comes to sporty driving fun, is once again playing the restructuring game with its model range. Didn't we just remember the ranking of Standard M and Competition to the high-profile ones CS- and CSL-versions? Well, times are changing! The big news? The competition addition is awesome! But while many may now think that the sporty M versions will disappear without any special labeling, the opposite is actually the case. In a reversal of the previous model, the Competition level almost in the basic equipment.

No more competition!

A look at the new one BMW M2 makes this clear: although it comes with the power of the Competition model, it is simple M2 called. After the basic model, the hierarchy is expanded by a few “hardcore” models, as Frank van Meel, the M-GmbH boss, calls them. This is achieved through models like this M2 CS clarified, followed by an even more exclusive one M2 CSL. It should be noted that not every series necessarily has to have the gradations. The key point behind the change? The majority of customers opted for the more powerful M models rather than the standard versions.

Let's take that M5: When choosing between an M5 with 600 hp and an M5 Competition with 625 hp, most people leaned towards the Competition variant. The M high-performance models will continue to ensure that there is not too massive a difference in performance between the regular BMW vehicles and the M models. The gap between models like the 218i or 320i and the performance cars like M2, M3 or M4 is filled by intermediate models like M440i, M550i or M850i filled. What remains? M GmbH raises the competition model to the status of the new standard. The name suffix disappears, but the performance remains. The range is also expanded to include CS and CSL models. These are exciting times for BMW fans!
