GKN is known to be a British automotive supplier and has already delivered over 900.000 electric drive units. And they are currently in the headlines with a converted Jeep Renegade. The concept car, dubbed “GTD19”, comes without a classic combustion engine. GKN has converted the Renegade into a purely electric car. The highlight is the fact that the GTD19 is the first electric vehicle with a two-speed transmission and electronic torque distribution. With the two-speed electric transmission, GKN claims to enable increased range, higher drive torque and, as a result, improved acceleration. The top speed should also increase and all in all the Renegade should convince with improved driving dynamics and more stability.

The car is being tested in Sweden for winter performance and durability. The two-speed transmission of the electric Renegade switches without interruption of traction and thus has little power or torque loss. The efficiency is to increase as a result of what is reflected in an improved acceleration and maximum speed compared to a vehicle with conventional input transmission. An 120 KW (160 PS) self-propelled power unit is installed, powered by a large powerpack in the engine compartment. Incidentally, we estimate the torque at about 400 Nm. Unfortunately, GKN does not give any details. However, GKN states that the e-system is very small and therefore fits easily into existing vehicles.
