After its world premiere in Los Angeles, the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS and its Clubsport variant also caused a stir at the GP Ice Race in Zell am See. In addition to spectacular rides on ice and snow, the focus was on their fuel: They were fueled with renewable petrol. The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is an uncompromising driver's car that scores with lightweight construction, a particularly agile chassis setup, sophisticated aerodynamics and a unique soundscape. At its first European appearance in Zell am See, the top model of the 718 family was able to demonstrate all of this - and with a significant reduction in CO₂.

The GT4 RS used were powered by synthetic fuels, which can make an important contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions in the transport sector. In this case, it was renewable gasoline based on an advanced biofuel made from food waste products. This fuel has already proven its suitability for use in Porsche high-performance engines in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, where the 911 GT3 Cup racing cars of all teams were fueled with it at every race of the 2021 season.
Reduction of CO₂ emissions in the transport sector!
Porsche Board Member for Development Michael Steiner explains: “In view of the large number of vehicles – around 1,3 billion worldwide – electromobility is not ramping up fast enough to achieve the Paris climate targets. The various regions of the world are also not developing at the same pace towards electromobility, so that cars with combustion engines will still be on the road decades from now.” With fuels produced in an almost CO₂-neutral manner, existing vehicles could also make a contribution to rapid CO₂ reduction . "We urgently need a solution for the sustainable operation of the existing fleets," emphasizes rally legend Walter Röhrl. “This goal can be achieved with green fuels. They are a useful addition to electromobility.” In order to actively promote this development, the go-ahead was given a few weeks ago for the construction of the first factory initiated by Porsche for the production of so-called eFuels.

Water is broken down into its components hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) by electrolysis. The hydrogen is then processed into eMethanol using CO₂ extracted from the air. In the next step, the so-called methanol-to-gasoline synthesis, this is turned into a synthetic raw petrol, which is processed into a standardized petrol that can be used in all petrol engines.
The joint project "Haru Oni" by Porsche, Siemens Energy and other international partners is the world's first integrated and commercial large-scale plant for the production of these synthetic, almost CO₂-neutral fuels. It uses the optimal climatic conditions for wind energy in the southern Chilean province of Magallanes to produce synthetic gasoline using sustainably generated electricity.
130.000 liters of eFuels per year are planned
From 2022, the pilot plant will produce around 130.000 liters of eFuels per year. Porsche will buy this amount in full and initially use the renewable synthetic fuel primarily in motorsport activities. In the future, Porsche will use eFuels in its own models with combustion engines – including in classic vehicles. "It gives me great hope that I will be able to drive old cars in the future without a guilty conscience because I run them with eFuels," says Walter Röhrl. "Fueling up a 50-year-old car with eFuels - that's pure sustainability."
