The best Porsche artcars of all time!

Is a Porsche the ultimate canvas? This certainly seems to be the case for the innovative artists presented here. After the recent presentation of the 968 L'ART a few weeks ago, there is an opportunity to take a look at the best examples of Porsche Artcars - these range from the Taycan to a colorful selection of 911 models and the 356. They all have one thing in common: It takes much more than a fresh paint job to turn the vehicles into absolute eye-catchers in automotive art.

968 L'ART by L'Art de L'Automobile

The 968 L'ART made its first appearance at Paris Fashion Week in 2021

This extraordinarily redesigned sports car is a creation of Arthur Kar, founder of L'Art de L'Automobile. The Artcar embodies the connection between cars and fashion and transports the retro look to the present day, inspired by the design team's love for classics. Not only were the roof removed and the headlights accentuated with chrome, but also Recaro seats with leather in the same color as the exterior paintwork and a specially designed audio system from Bose were installed. The 968 L'ART comes to life in the spectacular pearl color. Depending on the viewing angle, there are three other colors that give it a mysterious appearance. TAG Heuer created a matching wristwatch as an accessory for this unique automobile.

996 Swan by Chris Labrooy

The swan is a symbol of luck in China

Porsche has given the Scottish digital artist Chris Labrooy the opportunity to transport one of his digital works of art into the real world for the first time. The result is the 996 Schwan, which was designed for the anniversary "20 years of Porsche in China". The 911 Porsche 996 was the first vehicle to be sold in China two decades ago. In China, the swan stands for luck. The work of art had its first public appearance in Shanghai in early November 2022. The Artcar will have more appearances in the coming weeks.

911 Carrera by Nelson Makamo

The best Porsche artcars of all time!
Makamo painted the brightly colored elements of his 911 by hand

Even as a child, the famous South African artist Nelson Makamo dreamed of holding the keys to a Porsche. Years later he ordered his very first Porsche with the intention of hand-painting it with various elements - from the rear bumper to the seat moldings, inner door panels and side mirror covers. If you look closely, you will discover the three letters “Mma” in the left door panel, the word for “mother” in his native language Sepedi. With his Artcar, Makamo represents important people he met on his way. But the masterpiece also embodies his hope that his work will stimulate the imagination of children across the African continent.

Taycan Art Car by Richard Phillips

From electric power to flower power with the striking Artcar by Richard Phillips

The renowned American artist Richard Phillips has realized his vision in an artistic second skin for a Porsche Taycan 4S. The work of art came to life in Zurich, where it was created in December 2020 in a live action in the Leuehof pop-up restaurant. To create the masterpiece, Phillips used his painting "Queen of the Night" from 2010 and designed the body from the hood to the rear with a lush floral arrangement. Inspired by the beauty of nature and the curved silhouette of the sports car, Phillips succeeded in giving the fully electric Taycan a natural touch. The Artcar was auctioned for a good cause in spring 2021. All of the proceeds were donated to Suisseculture Sociale, a non-profit organization that supports artists suffering from the pandemic.

Taycan with artwork by Dale Chihuly

The floral Taycan electrified Singapore's famous Gardens by the Bay

Another electrifying art object was created in 2021: The oasis of Gardens by the Bay in Singapore not only houses a diverse collection of more than 1,5 million plants, but also became the temporary home of a Porsche Taycan. With Porsche Asia Pacific as the automobile partner for the “Glass in Bloom” exhibition by the American glass artist Dale Chihuly, visitors learned that a sports car embodies much more than the pursuit of speed. Wrapped in a garment from Chihuly's "Persians" series, which consists of brightly shining flowers in different colors, the Artcar was able to stand on a pedestal in front of the futuristic background of the SG50 Lattice - an award-winning pavilion that shows how innovative and sustainable architecture of the future could look like - well claim.

In close cooperation with the team at the Porsche Center, the vehicle was initially completely dismantled. The interior, the inside of the doors, the rims and the keys of the car have also been painted. The Artcar is now exhibited at various events around the world.

Taycan Artcars by Megan Claire Keho and Rei Misiri

The two artcars were created in just two hours in front of a live audience

In an unprecedented round of Art Battle Canada 2021, two top-class talents of modern urban art were invited to create unique designs for the Porsche Taycan. And that in front of a live audience - right on the car. At the end of the only two-hour competition, Rei Misiri prevailed against Megan Claire Keho, who painted the white model, with his interpretation of “different cultures and aesthetic elements from nature” on the black Taycan. After the "Art Battle", the vehicles were made available for press trips and events.

Janis Joplin's 356 C by Dave Richards

Day trip: Janis Joplin's famous 356 SC is one of the first examples of a Porsche Artcar

Rock legend Janis Joplin sang "Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz", but she owned a Porsche 356 herself. She bought the car in 1968 in dolphin gray - one of just nine colors that were available at the time - and used it as an everyday vehicle. Her fans soon recognized the automobile as her closest companion. To describe the 1964 356 SC as colorful is almost an understatement. Janis paid her roadie David Richards $ 500 to have the history of the universe depicted in almost every possible color on the car. Parts of that story included her band Big Brother and the Holding Company, the landscapes of California, the Eye of God, an ibex, skulls, mushrooms, and so much more. The result was a car that demands attention. Fans even wiped messages to the owner under the windshield wipers until it was stolen in 1969. The thief tried to cover up his act by spraying the characteristic paint over it. He was caught by the police.

Fortunately, Richards was able to remove the overpainting without major damage. Unfortunately, Joplin died in 1970 at the age of only 27, just two years after buying her Porsche. This eventually ended up in the hands of her siblings. Her brother Michael painted it back in its original color, dolphin gray, as the individual paintwork had meanwhile been run down. In the 1990s, the decision was made to let it shine in its splendor again: their family commissioned the artists Jana Mitchell and Amber Owen to restore the original overpainting. After the car had made the rounds of various museums for decades, her siblings finally auctioned it off to support charitable causes on their sister's behalf. The price? A staggering $ 1,76 million - a new record for the sale of a Porsche 356 at a public auction.

Crystal embellished 911 by Daniel Arsham

This 911 rocks: Daniel Arsham's crystal-clad eye-catcher

The visual artist Daniel Arsham is known for breathing life into objects in his own way and for playing with deconstructed futurism. Even in his childhood he made sketches of Porsche models and in 2019 created this unique crystal-eroded 911 (992). In this way he combined part of his own history with that of Porsche. The result was a vehicle that would not appear unusual in a post-apocalyptic world. The dystopian look was achieved by means of crystals embedded in the body. The drivable art object was exhibited at Selfridges in London in 2019 before going on tour in Asia. Today the Arsham 911 is in the collection of the Porsche Museum.

911 RSR Le Mans by Richard Phillips

The best Porsche artcars of all time!
First Artcar wins Le Mans, making history around the world

This Porsche 911 RSR is more than an object of art. It was the first Porsche Artcar to win the Le Mans 24 Hours, where it took victory in the GTE AM class in 2019. Its existence is the result of the close friendship between the artist Richard Phillips and the Porsche works driver Jörg Bergmeister. Phillips had already designed a helmet for Bergmeister in 2013. Six years later, this helmet proved to be the basis for the design of the Porsche 911 RSR Artcar. The enlarged details and the starkly contrasting colors made it unnecessary to look at the car up close to capture the entire design. This 911 RSR fits in the art and also in the Porsche history books.

1970 911 S by Ornamental Conifer

Forever unique: the first Ornamental Conifer Porsche

Cars, clothing, even dishes: British-born and California-based artist Nico Sclater - also known as Ornamental Conifer - describes them all with his wonderful freehand typography. Of all the objects he painted, Porsche's sports cars are among the most remarkable. The art of Ornamental Conifer can be recognized by the combination of Pop Art, enriched with humor and clever word games. So far, three Porsches have been wearing his style: a 911 from 1977, which was rebuilt from scratch and now resembles a Carrera 3.0 RS from 1974. A 935 that was shown at the SEMA Auto Show in Las Vegas, and the one featured here: the very first Ornamental Conifer Porsche Artcar. Designed for a customer in Texas, the message of this 911 S reads: "Always stay unique."

Designed for surprises: a large-scale Porsche Artcar

The Austrian sculptor and painter Erwin Wurm is known for his great works of art - his collection of “Fat Sculptures” has covered the themes of houses and cars for two decades. On the 20th anniversary of its iconic “Fat Car” in 2021, Wurm once again proved its originality by literally breathing life into it with the title “Breathe in, breathe out”. This video shows his interpretation of what it would be like if a 911 could inhale and exhale. Wurm, already known for his eccentric descriptions of everyday life, is targeting consumer society with a typical nudge and wink. The rendering is an example of his inimitable style.

911 Carrera type 996 by Biggibilla

The best Porsche artcars of all time!
The 996, first introduced in 1998, presents Biggibilla's distinctive Australian indigenous design

This artcar, a 911 Carrera (996), was meticulously hand-painted in 1998 in the showroom of the Porsche Center Melbourne by the indigenous artist Graham J. Rennie - also known as Biggibilla. It is decorated with Australian animals, such as a platypus, and was created on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first Porsche - the Porsche 356 "No. 1 “- created. As for artcars, these examples prove that there can't be too much of a good thing. Vehicles give all artists and designers a lot of space. Space that can be used to reinvent the norm. The Porsche Artcars promote inspiration and passion in the entire art and automotive world - in the past, present and also in the future.
