Crazy: Buick GNX engine in the Volvo 740 Turbo station wagon!

And once again we have a purebred Sleeper discovered on the web! And it subtly confirms that fast station wagons are simply cool. The base vehicle is a well-maintained Volvo 740 Turbo, powered under the hood by a non-brand engine. Incidentally, the 740 Turbo was one of the vehicles that laid the foundation for the station wagon segment. And the specimen from the pictures is a very special version. And it even comes from a prominent previous owner, because none other than the American actor, film director, racing driver and entrepreneur Paul Leonard Newman († September 26, 2008) was once the owner. And he was also responsible for the conversion and the associated increase in performance.

a Buick GNX in the 740 Turbo

This 740 Turbo station wagon was originally delivered in 1988 with a 2,3 liter engine. It delivered around 165 hp and a torque of 264 Nm. But that was apparently not enough for Newman, who bought the 740 Turbo as a new car at the time. So he got to work and installed a 3,8-liter turbocharged V6 engine from one Buick GNX. The engine is said to produce around 740 hp in the 320 and is coupled to a Borg-Warner five-speed manual transmission from a Pontiac Firebird. But not only the engine distinguishes this 740 from the others. Because the additional performance is accompanied by an improved one Suspension. This ensures that the elderly Swede crouches about 5 cm closer to the asphalt. As far as we know, the chassis consists of Bilstein struts and shock absorbers together with IPDLowering springs and stabilizers.

the unique piece is currently for sale

The stylish five-spoke Volvo rims feature BFGoodrich g-Force Comp-2 All season tires stocked. The interior is a bit worn, but generally in good condition. There are hardly any changes here, once you think of the Boost Gauge on the A-pillar and the Scanmaster 2.1 refrains. The latter monitors, among other things, the engine management of the GNX engine. In the trunk there are still the sports seats that can be stowed away at the rear, which the 740 got from Volvo at the factory. We are curious what the classic in the course of Bring a trailer auction will bring. If we get more information about the changes, there is of course an update for this report.
