Simson Schwalbe Tuning - hotter than ever!

The Simson Swallow, models KR51/1, KR51/2 and KR50, is an extremely popular moped which, like the Simson S50 & S51, is very suitable for tuning projects due to its simple construction and large range of spare parts. In principle, the technology is comparable and therefore the changes are very similar or even completely the same. There are several ways to improve the Simson Swallow's performance and appearance!

Simson Schwalbe tuning

  1. Motor tuning: One of the most popular tuning options for the Simson Schwalbe is to improve engine performance. This can be achieved by installing a larger cylinder and piston, a modified exhaust system, optimized carburettor tuning or electronic ignition (VAPE etc.).
  2. Transmission tuning: In order to improve the acceleration and top speed of the moped, the gearbox can be adjusted. This can be done by swapping out the sprockets or chain to get a different gear ratio. A change to four or even five gears is also possible.
  3. Suspension tuning: An improvement in the chassis can affect both the handling and the appearance of the Schwalbe. This includes installing lowered (shorter) or adjustable shocks, upgraded forks, or swapping out tires for better grip or a different profile. Changes to the swing arm are also popular.
  4. Brake tuning: To improve the moped's braking performance, the brakes can be upgraded, for example by installing disc brakes or using more powerful brake pads.
  5. Optical tuning: Many Schwalbe owners decide to change the appearance of the moped through optical tuning. This includes customizing the paintwork, adding decals or emblems, replacing fenders or adding accessories such as luggage racks, chrome parts or additional headlights. A "cleaning" is also not uncommon and the "shell" of the Schwalbe is often extensively changed.
  6. Electrical tuning: Retrofitting LED lights, new turn signals or a digital speedometer can improve the safety and appearance of the Schwalbe.

Note that some Simson Schwalbe tuning options may affect the moped's registration. Always ensure all modifications are legal and comply with local laws and regulations before beginning tuning.

What are the main differences?

The Schwalbe, a well-known moped from the former GDR, was produced in various model variants, including the KR50, KR51/1 and KR51/2. Here are the key differences between the three models:

Simson Schwalbe KR50:

    • Production period: 1958-1964
    • Engine: 50cc, single-cylinder, two-stroke engine with a 3-speed manual gearbox
    • Power: 2,3 hp at 5.250 rpm
    • Top speed: approx. 50 km / h
    • Distinctive features: The KR50 was the first Schwalbe model and featured a distinctive 'egg' shape with sweeping lines that accentuated the frame and body. The model also had a sprung rear swingarm and a telescopic front fork.

Simson Schwalbe KR51/1:

    • Production period: 1968-1980
    • Engine: 50 cc, single-cylinder, two-stroke engine with a 3-speed or 4-speed foot-operated gearbox
    • Power: 3,4 hp at 5.500 rpm (3-speed) or 3,6 hp at 5.750 rpm (4-speed)
    • Top speed: approx. 60 km / h
    • Highlights: The KR51/1 featured a revised design, moving away from the KR50's "egg" shape and featuring a more modern, angular body. The model also had an improved front fork and a stronger rear swingarm.

Simson Schwalbe KR51/2:

    • Production period: 1980-1986
    • Engine: 50 cc, single-cylinder, two-stroke engine with a 4-speed foot-operated gearbox
    • Power: 3,7 hp at 6.000 rpm
    • Top speed: approx. 60 km / h
    • Special features: The KR51/2 was the last Schwalbe model and had some technical improvements over the KR51/1, such as electronic ignition (on later models), an improved exhaust system and a modified drive concept in which the chain was better protected.

In summary, the Simson Schwalbe KR50, KR51/1 and KR51/2 differ mainly in their design, engine performance and technical features. While the KR50 model has a rounded "egg" shape, the KR51/1 and KR51/2 have a more modern, angular body. The KR51/1 and KR51/2 also have more powerful engines and improved technical components compared to the KR50 model.
