Cavity sealing - not only for new cars

Light, stable and even elastic to a certain extent – these are the requirements for a body and the chassis. In order to enable the highest possible stability with little weight, hollow profiles are used in vehicle construction. The vehicle frame is assembled from these molded parts. The disadvantage of tubular profiles, however, is their internal cavity, in which rust can form. What can be done about it?

Special care measure from the beginning

Condensation and humidity collect in these hollow chambers of the profile struts. The vehicles are protected against corrosion at the factory, but the hard-to-reach interiors are not always 100 percent insulated. The result: Only a tiny damage to the inner coating is the nucleus for rust. In order to counteract this, a mixture of anti-corrosion and air can be sprayed in using a special process, which partially microscopically small entry points for corrosion closes.

What helps against rust?

an effective one cavity Protection and underseal can be created by applying gel, wax or greasy substances. There are two options: mechanical and chemical treatment. The latter goes back to the effect of corrosion inhibitors, which build up a water-repellent microcoating through the polar addition of long-chain carbon molecules. The more common mechanical method used in vehicle construction is the application of layers that bond to the metal, preserving the underlying steel. The gel or wax is often applied in a heated form – the protective layer hardens after it has cooled.

Advantages of cavity sealing

Maintaining the value of the vehicle, an increase in safety and the good feeling of having cared for and protected your vehicle deeply are important reasons for having your car cavity sealed. This raises the question of whether older vehicles can still be protected at all by cavity sealing? Presumably the rust has already caused damage in some places in the cavity? Young and Classic cars require effective care. If the cavity is damaged from the inside due to rusting through, only a good body plumber can help. Therefore, as the owner of a vintage car, you should ensure that the cavity is sealed regularly, about every two years.

Can cavity sealing be done by yourself?

In order to save the costs for the workshop visit of the car, you can also apply the rust protection yourself with the appropriate equipment. However, this work requires a lifting platform or repair pit, since the commercial jack only allows the vehicle to be raised to a certain height, so that the underbody cannot be fully reached. The practical work is done with a spray gun. First, the holes provided by the manufacturer for cavity care must be found and marked. In order to be able to reach the long tubular lumens to their rear end, a flexible piece of tubing with a terminal vortex nozzle is inserted. The interior is now sprayed from the back to the front. Care should be taken with adjacent painted surfaces. These should be masked well before treatment, otherwise the Paint thoroughly cleaned must become.

Sealing of the cavities in the specialist workshop

Cavity sealing professionals have an eye for hidden problem areas or fold seams that are hidden behind the bodywork components. The execution of the sealing work by the experts does incur a certain financial outlay, but it verifiably preserves the vehicle's value. In the event of a possible sale, the invoices prove regular professional maintenance.
