Changing the ignition coil instructions: symptoms, repair/change, costs!

How do you recognize a defective ignition coil, when is repair or replacement necessary and what are the costs? And below there are instructions on changing the ignition coil! We will try to answer these questions with the following article. Unlike diesel engines, gasoline engines are not diesel engines. That's why one takes over spark plug in each cylinder the task of igniting the fuel-air mixture. The energy that the spark plugs need for this is supplied by one or more ignition coils. Various causes such as age-related wear can, however, affect the functioning of the ignition coil.

What indicates a defective ignition coil?

Changing the ignition coil instructions: symptoms, repair/change, costs!

There can be various symptoms such as misfires, uneven engine running, increased fuel consumption or a flashing one Check Engine Light (MIL) appear. Even if the car while driving goes out or the emissions test as part of the main inspection failed shall, it may be due to a defective ignition coil. Other possible causes include a Error memory entry how "Misfire cylinder X"Or"Y cylinder misfire".

Can you continue to drive despite a defect in the ignition coil(s)?

Continuing to drive with a defective ignition coil can cause consequential damage to the catalytic converter, the spark plugs, the ignition cables and the engine control unit. These often go with high follow-up costs which is why a workshop should be consulted immediately at the first suspicion. Attention: The ignition coil is not always actually defective, because there are other symptoms that can be confused with it. They are often stuck defective spark plugs or damaged ignition cables behind. An exact diagnosis should therefore be carried out in the workshop first!

Does the defective ignition coil need to be repaired or replaced?

If an ignition coil is found to be defective, a new part required as repair is not normally an option. The use of used spare parts is also not recommended, as age and wear and tear cannot be identified. Attention: The replacement of the ignition coil(s) should only be carried out by specialists, since a high voltage of up to 40.000V applied. Corresponding know-how is therefore absolutely necessary for the exchange!

It has to be beforehand definitely to disconnect the battery!

Normally you can easily get access to the ignition coils, so that the change effort is manageable. After removing the Engine cover the electrical connections on the defective coil can usually be loosened. The affected ones are then replaced ignition coil through the new one.

Cost of changing the ignition coil!

The repair costs for changing an ignition coil depend, among other things, on the type of ignition coil and the associated spare parts prices as well as the effort required to change it. Accordingly, it must first be checked whether it is a Single ignition coil with ignition distributor, a dual spark ignition coil or single spark ignition coil acts. Depending on the type of construction, it is usually sufficient only the damaged ignition coil to replace. The material for a new ignition coil costs around 20 to 300 euros. Well-known spare parts manufacturers are, for example, Bosch, NKG or Beru. An ignition coil change usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes. At an hourly rate of 100 euros, labor costs of around 25 to 50 euros are incurred. Overall, one must therefore with total costs of approx 45 to 350 euros expected.

Changing the ignition coil – our instructions

  1. Disconnect the car battery: Before you start, disconnect the car battery from the electrical circuit. This prevents short circuits or electric shocks while working.
  2. Remove engine cover: Remove the motor cover. Depending on the vehicle, this may require special tools.
  3. Remove cable: Carefully disconnect the cables from the ignition coil. Mark the cables or take a photo to ensure correct reconnection.
  4. Unscrew the ignition coil: Loosen the mounting screws and remove the old ignition coil.
  5. Insert new ignition coil: Insert the new ignition coil into the intended position.
  6. screw on: Attach the new ignition coil with the screws.
  7. Connect cable: Reconnect the cables. Pay attention to the exact arrangement of the cables.
  8. Attach engine cover: Put the engine cover back on.
  9. Connect the car battery: Reconnect the battery to the power circuit.
  10. Test engine: Start the engine. It should fire immediately and run smoothly. Listen for the sound to make sure all cylinders are firing.

Important information when changing

  • Disconnect the battery correctly: Make sure the battery is completely disconnected.
  • Mark connections: It is crucial to mark all connections correctly. Incorrect connections can lead to malfunctions.
  • Check ignition coil: Ignition coils can be replaced individually unless there are manufacturer-specific recommendations for complete replacement.
  • Ignition coil price: Depending on the vehicle and manufacturer, the costs for a new ignition coil are between 20 and 300 EUR.
  • Workshop costs: If you decide against replacing it yourself, expect workshop costs of 25 to 150 EUR for the work.
