Changing the toothed belt: note the change interval!

Even if you are not a car specialist and are completely unfamiliar with technology, you should pay attention to a few points when it comes to motor vehicles. This includes, for example, regularly changing the toothed belt. Although the high fuel prices tempt you to delay maintenance, it is not a good idea. In the case of wearing parts, which are necessary for driving safety, this would not be an option anyway. However, the change intervals of the toothed belt should also be considered, because pushing it on for too long can cause considerable damage to the engine with a defective toothed belt (up to major engine damage) develop. Contrary to fan belt, which is required for the alternator and other ancillary units, the toothed belt must ensure the rotating movement of the crankshaft on the camshaft. This opens the valves and also closes them. A torn tooth or a completely torn toothed belt means that the pistons with the valves collide.

Important for mileage

Changing the toothed belt: note the change interval!

The replacement intervals of the toothed belt are determined by the manufacturer depending on the car model the vorgeschrieb. The usual change is usually made at 60.000 to 250.000 kilometers. If the mileage has not yet been reached, the toothed belt should still be replaced. This is because the belt, which is made of special plastics and materials made of steel cord and glass fiber, ages and becomes porous as a result. It is therefore recommended to have at least one regular inspection (visual inspection) carried out in a specialist workshop. In principle, a first belt replacement should be made after six years .

The price depends on the car model!Changing the toothed belt: note the change interval!

Like the frequency of replacement, the price also depends on the belt and the model. The costs are average 300 to 1.000 Euro. A cost estimate helps to compare the prices and quality between the products and workshops and to save costs. When buying a used car, it makes sense to take a closer look at the service booklet and the enclosed invoices in order to be able to estimate future investment costs and avoid additional costs.

Warning sign rattling in case of chain defect!

If the car has a timing chain installed instead of the timing belt, that means by no means a permanent functionality. Even rattling starting noises or rattling at idle can indicate a weakness in the chain. Despite the missing test specification (Change interval) from the manufacturer, you should also have the timing chain checked regularly, depending on the mileage. In addition to checking, lubrication with engine oil is also crucial for the condition of the chain. The exact time from the oil change as well as the exact consideration of the type of oil to be used is of essential importance.

Of course, that wasn't the end of it!
