Chrome foil on a vehicle - allowed or not?

Chrome foil on a vehicle - allowed or not?

As an owner, it is naturally tempting to upgrade the look of your vehicle and design it individually. The surface and decorative parts such as the manufacturer's lettering, exterior mirrors, bonnet, radiator grille or fuel filler cap look higher quality than the standard version with an attractive film. In principle, every driver wants to stand out from the crowd and give his car or motorcycle a touch of luxury and elegance. A side effect that should not be underestimated is the protection of the actual paintwork. Rust and falling rocks don't stand a chance. If the foil is damaged, it is simply replaced. This is generally cheaper than a new paint job. Most films can be removed without leaving any residue and the resale value of the vehicle increases. However, you should be aware that with the first part of the film - and especially with the full-surface film - you are entering a legally not precisely defined gray area.

Legal situation:

In principle, wrapping a vehicle is not prohibited. Even high-gloss mirror films with a chrome effect are not prohibited. No matter which vehicle it is. To put it more simply - you can first wrap everything that drives. The legislature has not yet issued any clear provisions, because it depends on the type of foiling. A distinction is made here between complete wrapping and partial wrapping of the vehicle. Another decisive factor is how much the film shines and where it is on the vehicle. The police can take a foiled car or motorcycle out of circulation at any time. The reason is always the same. The vehicle does not have to, but it can pose a threat to other road users. It is a matter of interpretation. Even if you have registered everything with the TÜV, the law enforcement officers can intervene. Especially when there is an accident. Then it is a matter of interpretation for the insurance company whether and how it regulates the damage. Claims for damages are mainly rejected because the insurance company assumes that other road users will be dazzled. This can be avoided in advance if you use a film that is not so shiny or matt.

Suitable films:

Note the purpose of use. There are foils for smooth surfaces, surfaces with slight curves and surfaces with strong curves. Car wrapping film is intended for the full-surface foiling of vehicles. This is comparable to a normal finish and available in any desired color. Of course, you can also adapt them to your own ideas and wishes by means of digital printing. Although a classic, but it does not always have to be the carbon look.

And finally ...

Before considering foiling, talk to your insurance company. From this you can expect a concrete statement on your insurance coverage. Take a sample of the desired foil to the TÜV and ask if it is even allowed and approved for your vehicle. Once everything has been clarified, do not foil yourself. Leave this to a specialist company.

I would like to have a car wrapped. I'd seen chrome foil once or twice. But now I was unsure whether this was even allowed with a car. Good to know that this is basically allowed for the time being.
