In order to achieve the government's climate targets, state incentives were created to help drivers switch from combustion engines to electric cars. Users who have so far been undecided about moving away from the combustion engine will receive subsidies or tax breaks. However, some of these measures are temporary or change regularly as new political developments occur. So what is the current status of e-car subsidies?
PROMOTION FOR ELECTRIC CARS
The current governing coalition agrees that environmental protection must be improved. However, there is still no long-term agreement on the scope and duration of the funding. In the area of climate goals and supporting measures, those interested come across different terms such as environmental Bonus or Innovation bonus, causing confusion. In addition to the subsidies when buying an electric car, there are tax advantages that are also difficult to understand. It is therefore advisable to find out about current information on the level of taxes and subsidies for electric cars if you are planning to buy such a vehicle. In the following you will find an overview of the currently valid, expiring and planned measures (as of spring 2023):
ENVIRONMENTAL BONUS
The environmental bonus from BAFA (Federal Office of Economics and Export Control) is financial support for the purchase or leasing of a new electric vehicle in Germany. Since 2016, the bonus has been available in different variants. After the changes that came into effect in 2020, the newly defined premium amounts retrospectively can be applied for for new electric vehicles that were registered no earlier than November 4, 2019.
The environmental bonus consists of two parts:
- a state subsidy (federal share)
- an additional share borne by the vehicle manufacturers.
The premium applies to a list of newly purchased or leased electric cars specified by BAFA as well as to young, used electric vehicles. For leased vehicles, the premium is calculated based on the Holding period calculated. For used cars, 80% of the list price is used for the calculation. The gross manufacturer's share is deducted from this.
The environmental bonus since January 01.01.2023st, XNUMX is:
- €4.500 for vehicles with a net list price of up to €40.000
- €3.000 for vehicles with a net list price over €40.000 to €65.000.
CHANGES TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL BONUS SINCE 2023
The maximum funding of €4.500 is a reduced amount that applies to all applications from January 01.01.2023st, 2023 since the measure was revised. Other changes in the XNUMX version are:
- Funding for plug-in hybrids no longer applies: Only pure e-cars will receive the federal share.
- Increase in minimum holding period: To get a buff, the vehicle must be owned for a certain amount of time. Since January, the minimum holding period has been 12 months.
- Number of previous owners for used vehicles: With the change on January 01.01.2023st, XNUMX, used electric cars are no longer only subsidized if they are registered to the second owner.
ARE CHANGES PLANNED?
The new version of the environmental bonus also includes future changes, such as:
- From September 01, 2023: Only private individuals may submit an application. Until then, companies, foundations, associations, etc. can also make use of it.
- From January 01, 2024: Only vehicles with a base list price of a maximum of €45.000 will be funded.
- From January 01, 2024: Funding amounts are limited to a maximum of €3.000.
TOPIC: INNOVATION PREMIUM
The innovation bonus supplements the environmental bonus by doubling the federal share. This means that the total bonus is between €6.000 and €9.000. The extra premium used to only apply to new purchases of e-cars between June 3.06.2020rd, 31.12.2021 and December 2025st, 50. However, it has already been extended and is now scheduled to continue until the end of XNUMX. The innovation premium is intended for fully electric vehicles and chargeable hybrids. However, hybrid vehicles may only cause a maximum of XNUMX g CO₂ emissions per km or they must achieve a minimum range in pure electric operation. These are included:
- Purchase until December 31.12.2021, XNUMX: 40 km
- Purchase until December 31.12.2024, XNUMX: 60 km
- Acquisition from 01.01.2025: 80 km
OTHER FUNDS
In addition to the official state BAFA bonuses, there are also individual subsidies that are offered by federal states, municipalities or electricity suppliers. The energy provider Entega offers subsidies for users who install charging stations in their homes. Interested parties who want to switch to an electric car should therefore also look for additional subsidies at the location.
CONCLUSION
- The funding for electric cars in Germany includes various measures such as the environmental bonus and the innovation bonus from BAFA. However, these have limited amounts and terms. It is therefore advisable for interested parties to always find out about current subsidies and tax advantages when thinking about buying a new car.
- There are also individual subsidies from federal states, municipalities or electricity suppliers.
- If you want an e-car, you should look for special locally available subsidies.
- With more premium cuts already planned for the coming years, it makes sense to switch sooner rather than later.
- By switching to more environmentally friendly vehicles, you can not only benefit from financial advantages, but also make a contribution to environmental protection and come closer to climate goals.
