Perfect comeback: ABT Sportsline returns to Formula E!

Motorsport fans will be happy about this news: ABT Sportsline will return to the ABB-FIA Formula E World Championship in 2023 and will field two cars from the new Gen3 generation as a customer team. The squad was part of the Formula E family for the first seven years and, with 47 podium finishes and 1.380 points, is still the most successful team in the all-electric racing series, which made its debut in 2014. After a one-year break, preparations for the comeback are now in full swing.

ABT Sportsline back to Formula E

"Formula E has always had a big place in our hearts and we have never made a secret of the fact that we want to be there again," says Hans-Jürgen Abt. The managing partner took the risk back in 2014 and was the first to have ABT German team into Formula E. Now, too, the task is to put together an optimal package together with sports marketing boss Harry Unflath and CEO Thomas Biermaier. “Following the internal go-ahead, we are now talking to current and potential partners. The goal is to get a strong team on and off the track at the start.”

The first prerequisite for the comeback is a place in the starting field. “We have always been in contact with Formula E and the FIA, have had many discussions and have had great support from the whole team around Alejandro (Agag), Alberto (Longo), Jamie (Reigle) and Frédéric (Bertrand). “, says Thomas Biermaier. Result: ABT will take over a twelfth license for season 9. For the purchase of the powertrains for the Gen3 era of Formula E, ABT has also been able to win one of the manufacturers registered with the FIA as a partner and will announce the cooperation shortly.

Starting place, racing cars – racing drivers. "As far as our two drivers are concerned, we have very clear ideas," says Thomas Biermaier. “Unlike last time as a works team, we will probably start the season as underdogs. It is all the more important that we have fast and clever guys in the cockpit who are a good fit for us. The first talks are exciting and very positive, so we will definitely have our team together soon.”

"I'm delighted to welcome ABT back to where they belong: in the ABB-FIA Formula E World Championship," said Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E. "ABT has a long track record of success in Formula E with record-breaking points and podium finishes, so their return after a season in the Gen3 era is great news for fans and the sport.”

Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle also welcomes the return of ABT and the signals it brings: “Formula E is at the pinnacle of all-electric motorsport, so it is only natural for teams and manufacturers to be leading the electric mobility revolution , want to be part of the championship.”

Reigle continued: “In Season 9 we will introduce two groundbreaking developments designed to further increase the attractiveness of racing in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship: First, we will introduce the Gen3 race car, which will set new standards in terms of performance , efficiency and sustainability. Second, we are introducing new financial regulations to support competitive balance and financial sustainability for our teams. Together we create an environment for competitive racing and long-term growth. We look forward to seeing how ABT will capitalize on these opportunities when returning to Formula E at the start of the Gen3 era.”

Frédéric Bertrand, Director Formula E & Innovative Sports Activities at the FIA, said: “I am delighted that a team that has been so closely associated with Formula E from the start has expressed its clear intention to join ABB from next season - To return to the FIA Formula E World Championship and be on the front row of the new Gen3 era. ABT has solid credentials in the series and in motorsport overall and the brand's commitment underscores the appeal of both Formula E and the new Gen3 car recently unveiled at Monaco."

ABT was a founding member of Formula E and took part in every race for the first seven years. The greatest successes include victory in the first race in Formula E history on September 13, 2014 in Beijing, Lucas di Grassi's drivers' championship in 2017 and winning the team classification a year later. From 2014 to 2017 still a private team, from 2017 to 2021 the people from Kempten took over the use of the racing cars for Audi.
