With the new GR Yaris, Toyota presented a sports vehicle for roads and racetracks. The powerful vehicle is after Toyota C-HR GR Sport already the second car that the in-house motorsport department Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) produced. The Yaris GR will be launched in the second half of 2020. The GR Yaris will be developed on a new line intended for GR models at the Motomachi plant in Japan. The platform and engine of the GR Yaris are completely new. Also new are the aerodynamic styling, the wheel suspension and the permanent all-wheel drive GR-FOUR. With its low weight and high performance, the GR Yaris is ideally suited for racing.
Development priorities
The new GR Yaris is the first four-wheel drive vehicle from Toyota and the first homologation model for the World Rally Championship. It therefore promotes the development of a competitive car for the Toyota Gazoo Racing rally team. The focus of the development was on weight, aerodynamics and weight distribution. The roof line was lowered, the 1,6 liter turbo engine was transferred towards the center of the car and the Battery banished to the trunk. The weight distribution increases stability, handling and responsiveness. The three-door body is made of light materials such as carbon fiber polymer and aluminum and supports the relationship between weight and performance. The new platform enables a wide track and the use of a double wishbone suspension on the rear axle. Additional reinforcements under the side member offer better driving characteristics.
Design and turbo engine
The roof line was lowered by 91 mm and the frameless doors convey a particularly sporty look. The striking one is on the front radiator grill and the apron got an additional front spoiler. The alloy wheels are 18 inches tall. The turbo three-cylinder has 261 hp and develops a maximum torque of 360 Nm. Technologies such as piston crown cooling using a multi-oil nozzle, a partially machined inlet duct and large exhaust valves are also installed. The DOHC 12 V motor has a single-scroll ball bearing turbo and is connected to a six-speed manual gearbox, which is designed for high torques.
GR-FOUR all-wheel drive system
The new GR-FOUR all-wheel drive system is simple, flexible and light. The drive torque is distributed between 100: 0 (front wheel drive) to 0: 100 (rear wheel drive). TorsenDifferential on the front and rear axles, the distribution of the drive torque between the wheels of an axle is possible, thus ensuring better control when driving. The four-wheel drive system can be adapted as required. The basic setting in normal mode is 60:40 between the front and rear axles. The distribution is 30:70 in sport mode and 50:50 in track mode. The torque distribution is automatically adapted to the current requirements and conditions.
Suspension, platform and brakes
The platform of the GR Yaris combines the front part of the GA-B platform with the rear of the GA-C platform. In this way it was possible to install the GR-FOUR all-wheel drive in the Yaris. For this purpose, a suspension is installed on MacPherson struts. The heat-resistant brake system is equipped with 365 mm discs and four-piston brake calipers.
Circuit Pack: With the Circuit Pack, the GR Yaris can be designed and optimized for rally use and circuit use. Included are the Torsen differentials, a tuned chassis and the 18-inch aluminum wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tires.
