Besides Ferrari Maserati is the most famous Italian manufacturer of luxury sports cars. The company was founded 1914 by Alfiere Maserati as a family business in Bologna, Italy. The beginnings of Maserati were in the preparation of customer vehicles for racing applications. In the 1920er years Maserati developed the first own racing cars. From the 1930er years onwards, winning several races brought lasting corporate success. After the death of founder Alfiere Maserati, 1937 was sold to industrialist Adolfo Orsi. Under his leadership, the brand celebrated great achievements in racing, including winning the Formula 1 World Championship by Juan Manuel Fangio in 1957. For economic reasons, Maserati subsequently made the turn from a racing car manufacturer to a producer of road sports cars. After many years of belonging to the FiatCorporation Maserati is today an independent stock corporation. Maserati is one of the most popular car tuning brands.
